The Aegean Region of Turkey is one of the country's seven official divisions. It includes most of the country's coastline alone the Aegean Sea, which is part of the Mediterranean. The Aegean Region includes numerous coastal urban areas including Izmir, Turkey's third largest city. An area that was colonized by Greeks during the Antiquity, the region is home to some of the world's most important ancient ruins. Its Aegean seaside towns are known for being among the world's best sailing destinations, and are home to a growing windsurfing scene.
