İzmir is Turkey's third largest city and the largest in its Aegean RegionThe city is situated on the Gulf of İzmir just north of Çeşme, a giant peninsula which extends westward into the Aegean Sea.  The city was known as Smyrna for centuries, its name changing only in 1930, shortly after the formation of the Turkish Republic.  It has long been one of the most important cities of the eastern Mediterranean Sea; only Athens (Greece) is larger and not by much.  It's also home to Turkey's busiest seaport.
