Ghost Village of Kayakoy

AIRVŪZ STAFF NOTE : Check out this fascinating drone video of an abandoned village in the hills of western Turkey, compliments of top AirVuz contributor jesus_tr. It's called Kayaköy, and it's just a few km/mi from the town of Fethiye in the Muğla Province. Much of the town was built in the 18th century, and it had a population of about 6k at the beginning of 20th century. During the ethnic violence that erupted during and immediately after World War I, the town was completely abandoned. It remains what you see today - a ghost town.

The Ghost Town Kayakoy village in Turkey stretches along the hillside not far from the ruins of Lycian city Karmylassos (or another Lycian settlement since according to some sources there is no proof that it was exactly Karmylassos) in 7 km from Fethiye. So what is Kayakoy Ghost Town history? In the XVIII century Greeks arrived here from Dodecanese Islands and founded a town here , it’s name was Levissi. In this quite a large town with about 3.500 homes the Greeks lived for centuries. In 1923 when the city had about 6,000 Greeks the "population exchange" was started between Greece and Turkey the Greeks were forced to leave the town. Kayakoy Ghost Town in Turkey was recognized as one of the World TOP 10 Ghost Towns according to National Geographic - a world leader in geography, cartography and exploration.
