Varda Bridge (From the James Bond Skyfall)
AIRVŪZ STAFF NOTE :
The Varda Viaduct (sometimes known as the Giaour Dere Viaduct) is a famous train bridge in southern Turkey. Completed in the early 20th century, the viaduct was designed by German engineers as part of the Bagdad Railway project which helped to solidify Turkey's ties with Germany prior to World War I. The viaduct was the filming location for an epic chase scene which opened the 2012 James Bond movie Skyfall, the 25th installment in the series. Varda Bridge is located in roughly 2 kilometers north of Hacıkırı Village, Karaisalı county and it is referred to by local people as “The Giant Bridge”. It was built in 1907-1912 to complete the Istanbul-Baghdad-Hejaz Railway line with the contract signed by the Ottoman Emperor Abdulhamid II and the German Emperor Kaiser Wilhem. The bridge is 99 m. height and 172 m. long and connects a deep valley. Some scenes from the movie ‘James Bond Sky Fall’ were shot on Varda Bridge in 2012. During the construction of the bridge, 21 workers and a German engineer died due to various reasons. Another important and interesting feature of the Varda Bridge is that it is not a straight bridge but bends.
