It's from the ruins of the ancient city of Sardis in Manisa, one of the (inland) provinces which makes up the Aegean Region of western Turkey. Sardis was said to be founded by the sons of Hercules. Later it was the capital of the kingdom of Lydia, one of the most important of the Antiquity. Still later, the great city earned frequent mention in the New Testament.
