Returning to AirVuz after a two year hiatus, former Drone Video Award Finalist RavenAir brings us this spectacular drone video from Melbourne, Australia as the great port city endured a lockdown to combat the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic in August and September of 2020.  The video features footage of some of the city's top sights, including the Melbourne Shrine, the Royal Exhibition building, the Melbourne Star Ferris wheel, Docklands Stadium, Melbourne Town Hall, West Gate Bridge, Prince's Pier, and more.

AirVuz contributor and pilot Gizmo Drones brings us this phenomenal drone video of the great city of Melbourne, Australia.  Shot at sunset in February, in the waning days of the Southern Hemisphere summer, much of the video was shot along the Yarra River, which runs through the heart of the city.  Starting about the 1:18 mark, there is a great shot looking downriver (west), with the Melbourne Town Hall on the right (north bank) and the Arts Centre Melbourne with its "Eiffel Tower" spire on the left (south bank).  

You'll get a nice drone's eye view of Australia's second largest city in this video by contributor and pilot Jasonkmclean.  Host of the 1956 Summer Olympics, Melbourne is the capital of the state of Victoria, in Australia's  southeastern corner.  While it is Australia's #2 city, Melbourne was the country's largest city for many years, and remained Australia's primary business and financial center until fairly recently.  Even today, it is home to five of Australia's seven tallest buildings.

Top contributor Gizmo Drone used the three onboard cameras of the DJI Mavic Pro 3 drone combined with filters to produce some magnificent aerial views of Melbourne, Australia.   The video showcases three basic views of the city, with and without the filter attachments: (1) close-up shots of the Central Business District (CBD); (2) shots of the Queen Victoria statue in Domain Gardens facing north, with the white spire of Arts Centre Melbourne behind it and the CBD in the background; and (3) the great sports complex east of the CBD.    

Melbourne is Australia's second largest city, the center of a metropolitan area of about 5 million.  It's the capital of the state of Victoria, and was the initial national capital when the modern nation of Australia was born in 1901.  It's widely considered to be the cultural center of the country, and its seaport is the its busiest. Contributor Steffshots used a DJI drone to create this beautiful early morning aerial video of the great city on Port Philip Bay, which hosted the Summer Olympics in 1956.

Former Drone Video of the Week Finalist Gizmo Drones used the new Autel Nano drone to create this fantastic aerial video from the great city of Melbourne, Australia.  The eight ounce (8 oz.) drone, which is exempt from most UAV regulations due to its size, does a magnificent job of capturing the visual feel of one of the world's most beautiful cities.  Shot in low-light conditions, most of the video was shot over and around the Melbourne CBD, which is home to some of the tallest skyscrapers in Australia. 

Check out these stunning drone views of Melbourne, Australia in the Spring by former DVOW Finalist Gizmo Drones.  The video opens with shots of the Melbourne Cricket Ground (just east of the CBD) during a hot air balloon festival.  At the :40 mark, you'll see the Flinders Street Station clock tower.  At 1:10, you'll see the white spire of the Melbourne Arts Center, followed by the adjacent Queen Victoria Gardens.  Other featured locations include Docklands Stadium (1:20), St. Patrick's Cathedral (2:00), and the Port of Melbourne (2:20).

AirVuz contributor Gizmo Drones brings us this excellent aerial tour of the Australian seaside town of St. Kilda, an inner ring suburb of Melbourne.  St. Kilda is situated on the shores of Port Phillip Bay, a short distance south of central Melbourne.  One of the most fashionable areas of greater Melbourne during the city's meteoric rise in the second half of the 19th century, St. Kilda's fortunes fell after World War II before a gentrification wave beginning in the 1990's restored its aura of exclusivity.  

Top contributor Gizmo Drones used a DJI Mavic 3 Classic drone to create this stunning sunrise aerial tour of the Docklands area of Melbourne, Australia.  Located just west of the city's CBD, the Docklands was the core of the original Port of Melbourne.  With the containerization of freight traffic beginning after World War II, the port facilities were re-located to deeper waters further down the Yarra River.  The Docklands then fell into steep decline until being transformed by a massive redevelopment effort beginning in the 1990's.  

In this drone video by top AirVuz contributor Gizmo Drones, you'll get a bird's eye view of the West Gate Bridge in Melbourne, Australia.  Opened in 1978, the cable-stayed bridge spans the Yarra River and connects the Melbourne CBD with the city's western suburbs.  The bridge has a total length of about 2.6k meters or around 8.5k ft..  Its clearance of 58 meters (190 ft.) permits the passage of the largest containerships in and out of Australia's busiest seaport.  It's one of the busiest stretches of road in Australia.  

Australia was defined as a nation by its participation in the Great War, subsequently known as World War I.  The conflict broke out just a few years after Australia was granted independence by Great Britain in 1901.  As a Dominion country, Australia made an immense contribution to the Allied victory, both in Western Europe and in the Gallipoli campaign.  Contributor Fade2Gray used a drone to create this moving aerial view of the Shrine of Remembrance in Melbourne, a memorial to the 60k Australians killed in the conflict.  

In this drone video by Gizmo Drones, you'll get an aerial view of Port Melbourne, an inner ring suburb of Australia's second-largest city.  The area shown is the container terminal near Sandridge Lookout, which lies just beyond the mouth of the Yarra River.  Somewhat confusingly, most of the Port of Melbourne (Australia's busiest port) is actually not in the city of Port Melbourne but rather in West Melbourne, along the Yarra River; the area shown in the video is one of the few facilities of the Port of Melbourne located in Port Melbourne.

AirVuz contributor and pilot Gizmo Drones used an Autel Evo 2 drone to create this impressive aerial view of Melbourne, Australia at sunrise.  The video opens with a shot looking up the Yarra River towards the city's Central Business District to the east.  At the :30 mark, there's a great shot of the distinctive-looking Marvel Stadium in the Docklands area.  At about the 1:15 mark, you'll see two more Docklands landmarks: the Marina Tower development, and behind (north of) it the Melbourne Wheel.  

AirVuz contributor Gizmo Drones brings us this excellent drone view of the historic Princes Pier in Melbourne, Australia.  Constructed in the early 20th century, it is situated on Port Phillip Bay, just west of the Station Pier cruise ship terminal.  Princes Pier originally ran a length of 580 meters (around 1.9k ft.), and handled both passenger and freight traffic.  The pier was closed in the 1990's, and the first 196 meters (around 650 ft.) was restored in the early 2000's; beyond that, only the original pylons remain.  

In this video, top contributor Gizmo Drones gives us a bird's eye view of the Royal Exhibition Hall in Melbourne, Australia.  One of the most recognizable landmarks in Australia, it's located near the northeastern corner of Melbourne's Central Business District.  The hall was constructed in 1880, at a time when Melbourne had been catapulted to international prominence by the great Victoria gold rush of the 1850's.  At the time the hall was built, Melbourne was by some measures the richest city in the world.

Located in the Melbourne suburb of St. Kilda, Luna Park is one of the oldest amusement parks in Australia.  Seen in this video by former Drone Video of the Week Finalist Gizmo Drones, the park is situated on the shores of Port Phillip Bay, just a few mi./km south of the Melbourne CBD.  The park, which employed some of the designers who helped to build New York City's Coney Island park, opened in 1912.  Its Scenic Railway rollercoaster, which dates to the park's opening, is the oldest continuously-running rollercoaster in the world.  

Former DVOW Finalist Gizmo Drones brings us this excellent aerial tour of the Docklands area of Melbourne, one of Australia's most ambitious waterfront redevelopment projects.  Situated on the banks of the Yarra River just west of the CBD, the Docklands was the site of the original Port of Melbourne before the advent of large containerships required the relocation of the port downriver.  The area subsequently fell into a state of decay, before being transformed in a massive redevelopment effort which began in the late 1990's.  

Williamstown is a suburb of Melbourne, Australia's second-largest city.  Seen in this drone video by top AirVuz contributor Gizmo Drones, Williamstown occupies a peninsula just west of the mouth of the Yarra River, essentially surrounded by Port Phillip Bay.  The most impressive shots are looking northwest over Williamstown towards the skyscrapers of the Melbourne CBD off in the distance; in a couple of these shots, you'll see a giant cargo ship steaming into the Port of Melbourn.   The video was shot with a DJI Mini Pro 3.  

Former Drone Video of the Week Finalist Gizmo Drones brings us this excellent drone video of Albert Park and Lake in Melbourne, Australia.  It's part of the City of Port Phillip, a close-in southern suburb of Melbourne.  Once part of the Yarra River Delta before it was drained in the 19th century, the park covers about .8 square mi. (around 2.2 square km.).  It receives over five million visitors annually.  The video features excellent footage of the park itself as well as of the nearby Melbourne skyline.    

Take an aerial tour of Australia's giant Melbourne Star Observation Wheel, compliments of former Drone Video of the Week Finalist Gizmo Drones.  The ferris wheel stands just under 400 ft. (120 m) over the Docklands neighborhood of Australia's second-largest city.  The wheel opened in 2008, but closed after just a few weeks due to structural defects and didn't open again for five years.  The attraction became a casualty of the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic when its permanent closure was announced in early September, 2021.  

Take in these beautiful aerial views of a marina near Melbourne, Australia, compliments of AirVuz contributor and drone pilot Gizmo Drones.  The video was shot at sunset over the marina of Williamstown, a suburb of Australia's second-largest city.  Williamstown lies just west of the mouth of the Yarra River, about 11 km (around 7 mi.) southwest of the Melbourne Central Business District.  The marina here opens up on to Port Phillip Bay, considered some of the world's finest sailing waters.

Talented contributor Gizmo Drone used a DJI Mini 3 drone to bring us this outstanding aerial tour of the Docklands area of Melbourne, Australia.  Located on the Yarra River a little over a mile (about two km) west of the city's CBD, the Docklands was the site of the original port of Melbourne during the 19th century.  As the harbor was located downriver to accommodate larger ships, the Docklands became virtually abandoned.  Beginning around the turn of the 21st century, the Docklands was revitalized in a massive redevelopment effort.  

Check out this drone video of St. Kilda, Australia, compliments of new AirVuz contributor Gizmo Drones.  St. Kilda is an inner suburb of Melbourne, Australia's #2 city after Sydney.  Located just six km (around four mi.) southeast of central Melbourne, St. Kilda became the poshest area of the city during the great gold rush period of the 19th century.  The area subsequently fell into decline after World War II, but rapidly gentrified beginning in the early 2000's; it's now re-emerged as one of the city's most desirable areas.  

DJI's Mavic Mini 2 weighs a scant 250 grams or just over eight ounces.  How does such a tiny quad perform in stiff winds?  AirVuz contributor Gizmo Drones took the new Mini out for a spin over Melbourne, Australia in 30km/hr (around 19 mph) winds to find out.  As you'll see from the video, the stability of this tiny quad is nothing short of incredible.  Despite the considerable winds, the drone was able to create beautiful aerial footage of Australia's second-largest city, with nice, crisp shots of the Melbourne skyline. 

Melbourne, Australia is home to a world-class sailing scene.  Located on the protected waters of Port Phillip Bay, the area is home port to thousands of sailboats and yachts, and it hosts year-round racing and regattas.   In this video by AirVuz contributor and pilot littleviking, you'll get an aerial view of a sailing race off the Melbourne coast.   Shot with a DJI Mavic Pro 2 drone, the video features excellent footage of the impressive-looking boats as well as the skyline of Australia's second-largest city.  

The Docklands area of Melbourne, Australia was the home of the city's initial port, which was created by the re-routing of the Yarra River in the 1880's.  With the advent of giant containerships in the 1950's and 60's, the port was moved downstream to deeper waters, leaving the old Docklands in a state of virtual abandonment.  Beginning in the 1990's, the Docklands was largely re-developed.  In this drone video by Gizmo Drones, you'll get an aerial view of one of the last vestiges of the old harbor: the Victoria Dock.

The West Gate Bridge is one of the more prominent landmarks in the city of Melbourne, Australia.  Seen in this excellent drone video by top AirVuz contributor Gizmo Drones, the bridge spans the Yarra River near its mouth on Port Phillip Bay, just west of the Melbourne Central Business District.  The bridge's main span is just over 1.1k ft. long (336 meters), and is 190 ft. (just under 60 meters) over the water.  With ten lanes of traffic, it is the main western artery into Melbourne and one of Austraialia's busiest stretches of road. 

Top AirVuz contributor Gizmo Drones used the new DJI Mini 3 drone to create this beautiful aerial video from the great city of Melbourne, Australia.  Shot near sundown, the video shows the impressive capabilities of this <250 g quad, which is exempt from many drone regulations.  Most of the shots are towards the CBD from the south.  You'll be treated to some nice views of the Australia 108 tower; the 100 floor residential skyscraper stands just under 1.05k ft. tall (317 m) and became Australia's tallest building when it opened in 2020.  

In this drone video by AirVuz contributor Gizmo Drones, you'll get an aerial view of one of the newest skyscraper developments in Melbourne, Australia: the Sapphire by the Gardens and Shangri-La by the Gardens towers, which are connected by a skyway.  The latter, which is the taller of the two, stands 760 ft. tall (just over 230 m) and became the tallest all-hotel building in Australia when it was completed in 2023.  The former, which is about 40 ft. (12 m) taller, is a 57 story residential building.

Fade2Gray created this beautiful drone video of St. Patricks Cathedral in Melbourne, one of the most important Catholic churches in Australia.  Designed in the 1850's, the church took decades to build, and although substantially completed it was delayed by the depression which hit Australia in the 1890's.  Finally completed in 1939, it was one of the two largest Catholic churches substantially completed in the 19th century, the other being the great church of the same name in New York City.

Former Drone Video of the Week Finalist Gizmo Drones brings us this fantastic drone video of a cruise ship heading into port in Melbourne, Australia.  The ship is the Coral Princess, which is operated by Princess Cruises (a subsidiary of Carnival plc).  The ship has a length of 964 ft. (294 m) and displaces just under 92k gross tons.  Launched in 2002, the vessel can carry up to 1,970 passengers in addition to a crew of 900.  The video also includes some great shots of the Port of Melbourne and the city's skyline.  

Top contributor Gizmo Drones tied out a new version of Autel's Lite+ drone, in the process delivering us some excellent aerial views of a pair of important landmarks in the city of Melbourne, Australia.   The first (which you'll see at the opening of the video) is the white needle-topped Arts Centre Melbourne, in the inner-ring suburb of Southbank.  The second, which you'll first see at the :27 mark, is the Shrine of Remembrance in the Kings Domain area; it is a memorial to the tens of thousands of Australians killed in World War I.  

Throughout 2020, Australia was seen as an example of how to combat the deadly Covid-19 virus that shook the world.  Nevertheless, over the summer, the port city of Melbourne emerged as a "hotspot" within Australia, and was subject to increasingly stringent social distancing measures.  In this drone video by new AirVuz contributor and pilot Gizmo Drones, you'll see Australia's second-largest city as it appeared virtually deserted during a stage 4 lockdown which was imposed here beginning in early August.
