Melbourne is the second-largest city in Australia. Capital of the southeastern state of Victoria, Melbourne is a major commercial center and is home to the country's largest seaport. Founded in 1847, Melbourne was catapulted to worldwide fame and fortune with the great Victorian Gold Rush of the 1850s; in the ensuing years, Melbourne became one of the world's wealthiest cities and was the initial capital of Australia when the country became independent in 1901. Although the capital was subsequently moved to Canberra, Melbourne remained Australia's largest city until the 1970's, and is projected to retake that position in the 2020s. With a metropolitan population of around five million, Melbourne was ranked as the world's most liveable city by the Economist Intelligence Unit for seven years running.
