The video, which mixes footage from a DJI Mavic Pro 2 drone with ground footage, features shots of some of the highlights of the largest island in the Mediterranean. Highlights include aerials of the Castle Maniaci and the Greek Theater ruins in the ancient city of Syracuse, and the magnificent Palermo Cathedral in the capital city. This video was a DVOW nominee in August, 2019.

Contributor by_ewold used a DJI Mavic Air and Panasonic and GoPro cameras to record the highlights of his week-long adventures in the Italian island of Sicily.  The DVOW nominated video does a fantastic job of bringing out the natural, architectural, and human beauty of the Mediterranean's largest island. It includes footage of some of Sicily's lesser-known spots, such as the town of Noto in the Syracuse province near the island's southeastern tip, and the town of Modica to its west, in the Ragusa province. 

Explore the giant Italian island of Sicily in this fantastic drone video by AiVuz contributor SailOurWorld.    The video opens with an amazing shot of the ancient hilltop city of Ragusa Ibla, in the interior of southeastern Sicily.  Then it's on to the ancient Greek Temple of Concordia in the Valley of the Temples roughly halfway down the island's southwestern coastline.  Other featured locations include the Duomo of St. George in Ragusa at the :12 mark, the fortress of Maniace in Syracuse (:24), and more.

Located just off the toe of Italy, Sicily is home to Mount Etna, the largest active volcano in Europe and one of the most active in the world. The volcano is also the tallest mountain in Italy south of the Alps and is surrounded by the Etna National Park.  The rich volcanic soil around it makes for excellent grape growing, making it one of the islands great wine-producing regions. Facts aside, this Drone Video of the Week Nominee by OnFocus gives us a unique look at all the beauty the region has to offer. 

Allesandro_campo used a DJI Mavic Pro 2 drone to create this fantastic aerial video of the Italian island of Sicily.  The video is focused on the island's coastline outside of its major towns and cities.  Sicily's coastline varies tremendously over its length, and it is home to some of the most world's most distinctive-looking beaches.  As you'll see in the video, the Sicilian coast runs the gamut from sea caves to secluded cove beaches to lighthouse-tipped rocky points; all makes for a beachgoers' and boaters' paradise.  

Sicily's Mt. Etna is one of the earth's most active volcanoes.  In the 1990s, it was added to the list of 'Decade Volcanos' by the International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth's Interior (IAVCEI). This project was initiated by the United Nations to prepare for disasters created by volcanoes; Etna was selected due to its recent activity and the risk presented to nearby residents.  In this aerial video, drone pilot Haussmannvisuals provides a rare look inside the colossal landmark.

Top AirVuz contributor and first person view (FPV) drone pilot pioandreaperi brings us this epic FPV tour of Taormina, a town on the giant Italian island of Sicily.  Taormina lies on the Ionian Sea on the eastern coast of the island, roughly halfway between Messina (in the northeastern corner) and Catania (mid-coast).  The video features excellent shots of the city's ancient Greek theater as well as Mt. Etna, which lies just to the city's southwest.  Taormina was a primary filming location for Season 2 of HBO's hit series White Lotus.  

Top conrtributor Haussmannvisuals, profiled in a December, 2018 Drone Dish segment, created this stunning drone video of the island of Stromboli, just off the coast of Sicily.  One of the Aeolian Islands which sit between Sicily and the Italian mainland in the Tyrrhenian Sea, it's home to one of the country's three active volcanoes.  Said volcano is on full display here in its state of near-constant minor eruption, along with other beautiful sites like a lighthouse topped islet just offshore.     

This video by gabrycr7 will bring you over the giant Italian island of Sicily, the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea.  The video was filmed in the Metropolitan City of Palermo, the quasi-province which covers much of the northern part of the island. Here are some of the locations featured in the video: Mondello Cefalù; Casteldaccia; the nature reserves at Isola delle Femmine, Cape Gallo, and Monte Pellegrino; Francesi Bay, in the commune of Bagheria; and the commune of Santa Flavia.

Top AirVuz contributor CinematicPier earned a spot as a Drone Video of the Week Finalist for this amazing first person view (FPV) video of an Italian island called Lampedusa.  Lampedusa is one of the three Pelagie Islands, which lie in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea, roughly halfway between the large Italian island of Sicily and the North African country of Tunisia.  It's part of the Province of Agrigento, most of which is on the southern side of Sicily.  Lampedusa covers about seven square mi. (around 20 square km).  

Contrubutor Virgilio Ferrara used a DJI Phantom 4 drone to create this epic aerial video of Palermo, the capital of the region of Sicily, which includes the main island of Sicily and several smaller surrounding islands.  This nearly 3,000 year old city is situated on the northern coast of Sicily on the Tyrrhenian Sea, which is considered an extension of the Mediterranean Sea.  The Palermo metropolitan area is the fifth largest in Italy and the second largest in its southern region after Naples.  

Check out this amazing captioned drone compilation of Italy, compliments of AirVuz contributor and pilot virkitout.  Much of the footage was shot on the island of Sicily, which lies just off the "toe" of Italy and is the largest island in the Mediterranean.  Sicily highlights include shots of the coastal town of Mondella in the Palermo Region; the ancient city of Syracuse and its Ortyga Island, on Sicily's eastern shore; Catania, another eastern Sicily port town; and the central Sicily towns of Calascibetta and Enna.

Etna, one of the world's most active volcanoes, which lies on the eastern side of Sicily.  After dodging some red-hot lava spurts, you'll skim along spectacular coastlines, fly over quaint seaside villages, and more.  

Former Drone Video of the Week Winner Jturner brings us this fantastic first person view (FPV) done video Italy's Mt. Stromboli, one of the country's four currently (as of 2022) active volcanoes.  Stromboli is one of the eight Aeolian Islands, a small archipelago just north of the giant island of Sicily in the Tyrrhenian Sea (an inlet of the Mediterranean Sea).  With a peak elevation of about 3k ft. above sea level (around 925 m), Stromboli has been in near-continuous eruption for thousands of years.  

The Teatro Massimo Vittorio Emanuele opera house is one of the great cultural landmarks of Palermo, the capital of Italy's Sicily region.  Opened in 1897, it's the third-largest in Europe after the opera houses of Paris and Vienna.  Inspired by ancient Sicilian architecture, the opera house was designed by the famous Italian architect Giovan Battista Filippo Basile.  Seen here in this outstanding drone video by Sphereview, the theater was the filming location for the final scenes of the Godfather: Part III (1990).

The Teatro Politeama Garibaldi is one of the great 19th century architectural landmarks of Palermo, the Sicilian capital and the center of Italy's fifth-largest metropolitan area.  It's located in the Piazza Ruggero Settimo, one of the city's most popular public squares.  The home of the Orchestra Sinfonica Siciliana, the concert hall and theater was completed in 1891, following a quarter century design and construction period.  It's the second largest indoor performance venue after Teatro Massimo, which was designed and built during roughly the same time period.  

Check out this drone video by IngusKruklitis for some great aerials of some of the most famous spots in Sicily.  The beginning of the video was shot around the city of Palermo; you'll get some great glimpses of its famous Cathedral as well as Mt. Etna looming in the background.  Another highlight is the hillside town of Taormina on the island's eastern coast.  Towards the end you'll also get some great views of the Valley of the Temples archaeological complex in the middle of Sicily's southern coastline.   

Former Drone Video of the Week Winner Lewieque brings us this stunning drone video from Mt. Etna, one of the world's most active volcanoes.  Mt. Etna rises from the eastern side of the giant Italian island of Sicily, the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea.  As of late 2022, its peak height is just over 11k ft. above sea level (about 3.35k m), making it Italy's tallest mountain south of the Alps.  In a near-constant state of volcanic activity, Mt. Etna erupted so much during 2021 that its height grew by about 100 ft. or around 30 m.  

The Italian island of Sicily is known for many things, from active volcanoes to the Godfather movie series.  It is also known for its urban (street) art scene, particularly in the Palermo.  In this fascinating drone video by contributor UnaLacrimaSulVisoAerial, you'll get a look at some of the most famous graffiti art and murals in this provincial capital city.  It's in the Ballaro market district, which is in the historical city center.  It's considered "ground zero" for Sicilian street art.

Contributor ArmandoWDN used a drone to create this spectacular aerial tour of Sicily, the Italian island which is the largest in the Mediterranean.  The video features some of the most well-known spots in this long-inhabited land.  Highlights include a great shot of the Palermo Cathedral at about :20; the Valle dei Templi archaeological site near the city of Agrigento; the ancient city of Ragusa; a medieval coastal watchtower; and more sites from the coastline and interior of this fantastically diverse island.    

Check out these stunning drone views of some "unknown" but impressive sights on the Italian island of Sicily, compliments of former DVOW Finalist Alessandro_campo.  The first spot is called Ariadne's Labyrinth, which was designed by the sculptor Italo Lanfredini and is located in the town of Castel di Lucio in the province of Messina.  The next stop is the Pyramid of the 38th Parallel, which is located in the Fiumara d’Arte museum, also in Messina.  You'll also see a giant inselberg (isolated rock) somewhere in the Sicilian hills.  

For a first upload to AirVuz, brand-new contributor AIRWORKS brings us this excellent drone video from the Italian city of Ragusa.  Ragusa is situated near the southeastern tip of the roughly arrow-shaped island of Sicily, the largest in the Mediterranean Sea.  Over three thousand years old, Ragusa is part of the historical area known as the Val di Noto, which covers approximately the southeastern third of the island.  Most of the city was rebuilt in the Baroque style after it was devastated by an earthquake in 1693.  

Sicily is not only the largest island in the Mediterranean, it's also one of the oldest in terms of human settlement.  Archaeologists believe that it may have been settled as long as 12,000 years ago, long before most areas of Europe.  In this video, contributor and drone pilot armandoWDN gives us an aerial tour of Patalica, an area in the southeast corner of the island, near the city of Syracuse.  Pantalica is the site of the Necropolis, a cemetery which is thought to hold as many as 5,000 graves.

A stretch of Sicily's eastern coastline shows the continuing power of ancient Greek mythology to hold our fascination.  It's the area north of Catania (the Italian island's principal commercial center), just east of Mt. Etna.  Seen from above in this drone video by AirVuz contributor g-fly_it, the area sometimes referred to as the Cyclopean Riviera gets its name from the Cyclopean Islands, the area's most distinctive natural feature; the tiny islets feature prominently as the home of the mythical cyclops in the works of Homer.  

The Italian island of Sicily will forever be associated with the Godfather trilogy, Francis Ford Coppola's masterpiece of organized crime.  The book from which the screenplay was adapted had scenes in the town of Corleone, but this was too developed by the early 1970's when the first installment was filmed.  Instead, filming took place in Savoca and Forza d’Agrò, in the Messina province.  Behold these magnificent Sicilian towns in this awesome drone video by contributor jone_83.

Take an aerial mini-tour of the city of Catania on the giant Italian island of Sicily, compliments of AirVuz contributor and pilot AN-DRONE.  Shot with a DJI Mavic Mini, the video will take you over Sicily's second-largest city after Palermo.  Catania is situated roughly midway down the island's eastern coast.  Founded by Greeks in the 8th century BC, the city was almost completely destroyed by an earthquake in the 12th century AD; it recovered and went on to become one of the most important cities during the Italian Renaissance.  

You'll get an entirely new perspective of the volcanic Mt. Etna on the Italian island of Sicily with this amazing first person view (FPV) video by Livyu FPV.  With an elevation of about 3.3k meters above sea level (about 11k ft.), Mount Etna is the highest peak in Italy south of the Alps; it was added to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list in 2013.  In the video, the pilot uses long-range video and RC transmission to take on this fearsome monster with a racing drone, earning a spot on the FPV Pilots to Watch list in August, 2019.

For a first upload to AirVuz, brand-new contributor In Giro con Milo brings us this outstanding drone video of a town on the island of Sicily.  Cefalù is located on the island's northern coast, about an hour's drive east of Palermo.  Like many Sicilian towns and cities, Cefalù was founded by Greek colonists during the Antiquity.  The video features excellent footage of the Cefalù Cathedral, the city's most prominent landmark, which was built in the 12th-13th centuries AD during the time when Sicily was under Norman control.  

The tiny island of Ortygia is just off the coast of Syracuse, Sicily, Italy. Known for its historical center, the island was transformed into a natural fortress with harbors and many inhabitants in ancient times. This aerial video by ito includes many of the island’s famous architecture including the Cathedral of Syracuse (Duomo di Siracusa), Piazza de Duomo, Piazza Archimede, and the Fountain of Arethusa. You can see this small but famous island from above in this drone video by contributor ito.  

Top content creator and drone pilot Chris Borg created this beautiful aerial video of Italy's Aeolian Islands using a DJI Mavic Pro drone.  These eight islands are situated immediately to the north of Sicily in the Tyrrhenian Sea, a subdivision of the Mediterranean Sea which is bounded by Sicily, Corsica, Sardinia, and the Italian mainland.  Due to their unique volcanic origins and landscapes, these islands have collectively been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage natural site.    

Take in these fantastic aerial views of the Italian town of Castelbuono on the island of Sicily, compliments of AirVuz contributor and drone pilot Giro con Milo.  The town lies roughly in the middle of the island's northern coast.  While it's part of the Metropolitan City of Palermo, it's well to the east of the regional capital city.  The city takes its name from the hilltop castle which is prominently featured in the video.  The castle was built in the 14th century, and underwent numerous alterations in the 17th century.   

Brand-new AirVuz contributor Ri Sicily Drone brings us this excellent drone view from a mountain overlooking the city of Palermo on the Italian island of Sicily.  The highlight of the video is a neo-gothic building called Utveggio Castle, which sits atop Monte Pellegrino, just northwest of the city.  Completed in the 1930's, the "castle" was originally a hotel; it's now part of a school of management.  The video also includes footage of another Monte Pellegrino landmark: the Sanctuary of Santa Rosalia, the patron saint of Palermo.

AirVuz contibutor Danilo Spoglia brings us this excellent drone video from a rocky beach area on the Italian island of Sicily.  It's called the Faraglioni di Scopello, and it's a series of sea stacks near the town of Castellammare del Golfo in Trapani, the province which covers the western tip of the Mediterranean Sea's largest island.  It lies along the Gulf of Castellammare, a bay of the Tyrrhenian Sea, which is itself an inlet of the Mediterranean formed by the Italian mainland and the islands of Sicily, Sardinia, and Corsica.  

 
 
  
 
 

AirVuz contributor and drone pilot In Giro con Milo brings us this magnificent aerial view of a well-known hilltop medieval fortress on the Italian island of Sicily.  It's called variously the Castle of Mussomeli (Il Castello di Mussomeli) or Castle Manfredonico, and it's located just east of the town of Mussomeli in the province of Caltanissetta, near the geographic center of the island.  Although the original structure dates to the 14th century, it took on much of its current form in the 15th century.  

North of the massive Italian island of Sicily is a series of smaller islands known as the Aeolian chain.  Like Sicily, they were formed by volcanic activity and are comparatively young in geological terms.  In this drone video by rubens_monti, you'll get a bird's eye view of Vulcano, the southernmost of the Aeolians.  It's located about 25 km (around 15 mi.) north of the northern coast of Sicily in the Tyrrhenian Sea.  The island's three volcanic centers have been inactive since the late 19th century.

AirVuz contributor and first person view (FPV) drone pilot pioandreaperi brings us this excellent FPV video from the coast of the giant Italian island of Sicily.  The video was shot over and around the tiny Isola Bella, an islet which lies just off the Sicilian coast near the town of Taormina on Sicily's eastern coast, roughly halfway between the cities of Catania (to the south) and Messina (to the north).  Privately owned for centuries, the tiny island came under control of the regional government of Sicily in 1990.  

For a first upload to AirVuz, new contributor and pilot slqfilms brings us this excellent drone video of a beautiful town on the giant Italian island of Sicily.  The town is called Palma di Montechiaro, and it's located in the province of Agrigento, about midway down the island's southern coast.  The video was filmed with a DJI Mavic Air 2 drone.  The town was depicted in the novel the Leopard by Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa; published posthumously in 1958, the work is considered one of the great works of modern Italian literature.  

Take a tour of the ancient Italian city of Salemi in this fantastic first person view (FPV) drone video by AirVuz contributor and FPV pilot CataFpv.   Salemi is located in the western part of the giant island of Sicily, in the province of Trapani.   Dating to the Antiquity, Salemi briefly became the capital of Italy in 1860 as the modern-day nation was forged under the leadership of Giuseppe Garibaldi.  Extremely well shot and edited, this video was picked for the AirVuz FPV Pilots to Watch list in January, 2021.  

Shelteredexistence created this beautiful drone video of a villa in a remote part of the Italian island of Sicily.  It's in the town of Partanna, which lies near the western tip of the Mediterranean's largest island.  It's part of the province of Trapani, which covers the western extremity of Sicily, the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea and a semi-autonomous region of Italy.  With a long coastline, most of the province is covered by hills ranging up to about 1.1k meters (around 3.3k ft.) above sea level.  

Take a first person view (FPV) drone tour of ancient Messina, Italy in this fantastic FPV city tour by AirVuz contributor and pilot pioandreaperi.  Messina is the third-largest city on the island of Sicily, after Palermo and Catania.  It's located in the northwestern corner of the island, the closest spot in Sicily to the Italian mainland.  Founded by Greek colonists in the 8th century BC, Messina has been fought over for much of its history, most recently during World War II when the city was subject to massive Allied air assaults.  

Take a first person view (FPV) drone tour of a seaside village called Scopello on the giant Italian island of Sicily, compliments of AirVuz contributor and FPV pilot Bibo FPV.  The village is located on the Castellammare del Golfo, an inlet of the Tyrrhenian Sea (itself a giant inlet of the Mediterranean Sea) on Sicily's northern coast in the province of Trapani.  Inhabited since the Antiquity, Scopello has become a popular destination from Palermo, the largest city of Sicily, which lies just to the east.         

AirVuz contributor GIUXER used a DJI Mini 2 to create this excellent drone video of the historic center of Syracuse on the Italian island of Sicily.  The ancient city sits on a small island called Ortygia, which lies at the northern entrance of a bay on the eastern side of Sicily.  The island is also known as Città Vecchia, or Old City.  It's connected to the mainland by two bridges.  Ortygia figures prominently in Greek mythology as the possible birthplace of the goddess Artemis and possibly Apollo.  

Top contributor CataFpv brings us this fantastic first person view (FPV) drone tour of some famous ancient ruins on the Italian island of Sicily.  The ruins of Selinunte are located near the western tip of the island, on its southern coastline.  One of Sicily's largest Greek colonies, the city is believed to have reached a population peak of about 30k around 400 BC.  The main standing structure is the Temple of Hera, one of five which made up the city's acropolis.  This video made the FPV Pilots to Watch list in December, 2021.  

Take a tour of the Italian island of Sicily in this magnificent 4k drone video by contributor filipzaja.  The video will take you across the breadth of the island, the largest in the Mediterranean.  Some of the sights featured include the commune of Trapani on the west coast of the island; Masarsala, the most populous city in western Sicily; and Taormina, a hilltop town on the eastern side of the island.  You'll also get aerial glimpses of some of the island's wind turbines as well as a salt mine.

In this drone video by Steffen de Back, you'll get an aerial tour of the Italian island of Sicily.  The video includes several locations featured in the 1972 movie the Godfather, including Castello degli Schiavi in Trapani (at the 1:02 mark);  the town of Acireale, on the island's eastern coast (1:23); and the town of Savoca just to its north (1:15).  Other locations include the the city of Syracuse (0:00 and also at 1:32), the town of Erice, at the island's western end (:13); and the interior towns of Enna (0:37) and Calascibetta (0:54).

First person view (FPV) pilot Livyu FPV found an ideal place to fly his racing quad: an abandoned town on the giant Italian island of Sicily.  According to the pilot, the area was abandoned after an earthquake in the 1960’s.  It has very restricted access since the site is so fragile, but he walked right in when the gates to the area were open. Once spotted by security he asked if it would be ok to fly.  As you’ll see he was able to secure his five minutes of freestyle, bando heaven.

AmandoWDN worked with the commune of Ragusa on the Italian island of Sicily to create this video promoting environmentally sustainable tourism in the Mediterranean.  Ragusa is a medium-sized city that lies towards the eastern end of Sicily's southern shore, in the historical region known as Val di Noto.  In its current form, Ragusa is really two cities melded together: an ancient city which was heavily damaged in a 1693 earthquake, and a newer city to which most of the population then re-located.  

Contributor and drone pilot Thomas Vitali created this moving aerial video of Sicily in memory of his just-departed uncle, who had grown up on the Italian island.  The video brilliantly captures some of the most beautiful sights of the Mediterranean's largest island, which is  home to over 5 million permanent residents.  You'll get epic bird's eye views of its stunning coastline, its roads snaking to mountaintop villages, and an awesome shot of the Palermo Cathedral in the island's capital city.  

Two-time Drone Video of the Week Finalist @DronDuilio brings us this fantastic drone video of Italy's Mt. Etna, one of the world's most famous volcanoes.  Situated on the east coast of the giant island of Sicily, Mt. Etna has a peak elevation of 3.3k meters above sea level (just under 11k ft.), making it the highest Italian mountain south of the Alps.  It's also the highest European volcano west of the Caucasus Mountains.  One of the world's most active volcanoes, Mt.
