Calabria and Basilicata are two of the main regions of southern Italy. Calabria, which forms the "toe" of the country seen on a map, includes the provinces of Catanzaro, Cosenza, Crotone, Reggio di Calabria, and Vibo Valenta. The Basilicata region sits at the "heel" or "instep" of Italy, and includes the provinces of Matera and Potenza. Largely rural, the Calabria and Basilicata regions are known for their quaint seaside towns and beaches along the Tyrhennian Sea, the Ionian Sea, and the Gulf of Taranto. Culturally, its greatest treasure is probably the city of Matera, a historically rich city which has been used as a filming location for numerous feature movies.
