The capital of its namesake province as well as the region of Basilicata (the "ankle" of Italy), Matera is situated in a gorge of the Gravina River. The historical and cultural heart of the city is the Sassi di Matera, which consists of the Sasso Caveoso and Sasso Barisano Districts.
