Bird's Eye Views of Greece's Ionian Islands

Lefkada and Kefalonia are two of the seven main islands of Greece in the Ionian Sea, west of the mainland.  Lefkada is technically no longer an island, as it's now connected to the mainland via a causeway.  Kefalonia, the better-known of the two, lies to its southwest.  In this outstanding drone video, you'll get an aerial view of some beautiful spots on the two islands, both of which bear the marks of centuries of Venetian rule. Mrgilchen created this beautiful drone video of Corfu, the northernmost and perhaps best-known of the seven main islands which lie off the western coast of Greece in the Ionian Sea.  Once known as Kerkyra, Corfu is repeatedly referenced in some of the most important stories of Greek mythology, and it later played a key role in the Peloponnesian War.  In early modern times, the island was regarded as a bulwark against Ottoman expansionism and became one of the most heavily fortified places in Europe. 

Contributor 11 Shots Media created this brilliant 60 second aerial tour of three of Greece's islands in the Ionian Sea to the west of the mainland.  The islands shown in are Lefkada, Ithaki, and Kevalonia.  These are the central islands of the group, which also includes Corfu, Paxi, Zakynthos, and Kythira.  As you'ss see in this video, these islands combine aspects of Greece's Aegean islands to the east with those of Italy to the west; in large measure, this reflects the period during which the Ionian Islands were under Venetian control.  

The Greek island of Kythira is considered to be part of the Ionian Islands group, although it sits a good ways south of the other six main islands.  It's located south of the Peloponnese Peninsula, essentially between the Ionian and Aegean Seas.  In ancient times, the island played a pivotal role in the decades-long struggle between Sparta and Athens which is famously known as the Peloponnesian Wars.  If you watch this drone video of Kythira from fakefakettv, you will agree this was a prize worth fighting for! 

Former Drone Video of the Week Finalist Aerial_Greece brings us this excellent drone video from the Greek island of Lefkada.  One of the main islands off of Greece's western coast on the Ionian Sea, Lefkada is connected to the Greek mainland by causeway.  At the :10 mark, you'll see the first shot of Porto Katsiki Beach, one of Greece's most famous beaches, which lies on the southwestern part of the island.  Other locations featured in the video include Kathisma Beach (north of Porto Katsiki) and Cape Lefkada Lighthouse.  

Check out this drone video of the quaint village of Lakka on the Greek island of Paxos, compliments of Drone AéroView.  It lies on the north side of the island (which is also sometimes called Paxi), the smallest of the seven Ionian Islands west of the mainland.  The stunning little port town sits on a nearly circular-shaped bay, on which sit Kanoni and Harami Beaches.  Lakka is a popular spot for sailing, power boating, wind surfing, snorkeling, and other sundry aquatic recreations.  

The Greek island of Zythera (Kythira) is something of an oddity.  It's considered part of the Ionian Islands group but lies far to the south of the other six main Iionian Island, near the southern tip of the Peloponnese Peninsula.  Zythera was a key battleground during the Peloponnesian War of the 5th century BC, and (like the other Ionian Islands) was part of the Venetian Empire for most of the Middle Ages.  In this drone video, you'll get an aerial view of the town of Agia Pelagia on the northern side of the island.  

Contributor and pilot Harispomonis brings us this beautiful 4k drone video of Marathonisi, tiny islet in the Ionian Sea.  It sits off the coast of Zakynthos, one of the seven main islands which makes up this territory of Greece.  Marathonisi is also known as "Turtle Island", in reference to its role as a nesting place for a certain species of loggerhead turtle.  Zakynthos is one of the southern Ionian islands, and it's situated just west of the Peloponnese Peninsula on the southern part of the Greek mainland. 

Kalamos is one of the lesser known Greek islands in the Ionian Sea, west of the Greek mainland.  For administration purposes, it's now considered part of the island of Lefkada, which lies to its northwest.  Covering only about 25 square km (around 10 square mi.) its wintertime population is about 500.  Most of its population is situated in and around the harbor town of Kalamos, on the eastern side of the island.  Seen here in this drone video by Colinos, the town's population swells considerably during the summer months.  

In this video, contributor Badios and aerial acrobat Katerina Soldatou take their act to one of the most well known beaches in Greece's Ionian Islands.  It's called Nevagio Beach, and it's on the island of Zakynthos.  Partially secluded, the beach is also known as "Smuggler's Cove", in reference to a ship which wrecked near Navagio in 1980 and had been rumoured to be carrying contraband.  Nevagio Beach distinguished itself by making the list of the Forbes Top 50 Beaches in the world in 2017.  

Contributor and DVA winner druno created this epic selfie from one of the world's most famous beaches: Navagio Beach, on the Greek island of Zakynthos.  Situated on the southern side of this bit of paradise in the Ionian Sea, the cove was named as the #1 beach in the 2018 edition of Lonely Planet's World's Best Beaches survey.  Navagio Beach is sometimes called Shipwreck Cove in reference to its famous landmark: the wreck of the MV Panagiotis, which grounded here in 1980 under somewhat mysterious circumstances. 

Zakynthos is frequently considered to be the most beautiful of the seven main Greek islands in the Ionion Sea.  Mentioned by Homer in his Odyssey and Iliad epics, the island was called the Flower of the Levant by the Venetians during the Middle Ages when the island was under their control.  In this drone video by harispomonis, you'll get a bird's eye view of the island, including its famous shipwreck beach as well as the two tiny islands of Maratonisi and Kalonisi which sit off its southern shores.

For a first upload to AirVuz, new contributor wktorastrone.pl brings us this fantastic drone video from the Greek island of Corfu.  The video opens with some great top-down shots of the coast of the island, which lies west of the mainland in the Ionian Sea.  At about the 1:24 mark, you'll see Cape Drastis, on the northwestern coast of the island.  Starting at 1:53, you'll see the Byzantine hilltop fortress of Angelokastro, on the island's western coast.  Other shots include some of Corfu's hidden beaches, marinas, and offshore islets.

While the Greek island of Corfu is well known for Venetian architecture and imposing fortresses of its coastal settlments, its interior is much less explored.  In this drone video by AirVuz contributor Laurent Paris, you'll see the island's mountainous interior.  Corfu's main mountain range runs across the northern part of the island, which faintly resembles a tadpole and is widest at its northern "head".  The main mountain of this range is Pantokrator, which has a summit elevation of just under 3k ft. above sea level (around 900 m).  

Corfu is the second largest (and northernmost) of the Greek Ionian Islands and its most well known.  The island's main city (also called Corfu) has played an important role throughout ancient and modern Greek history, and it is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site.  Corfu was a shooting location in the 13th James Bond movie For Your Eyes Only (1981) starring Roger Moore, at times standing in for Albania.  In this video, Dronakias gives us a bird's eye view of this cultural gem in the Ionian Sea.

Fly along with contributor and drone pilot Miklos for an aerial tour of the storied Greek island of Corfu.  Corfu is probably the best known of the group of islands west of the Greek mainland in the Ionian Sea.  The video features footage from the following locations, all of which are on the island's northern side: the Byzantine castle of Angelokastro, built atop a steep cliff; Mount Pantokrator, Corfu's highest mountain;  Almiros beach, near the town of Acharavi; and Cape Drastis, a promontory off of Corfu's northwestern coast.

Visitors to the Greek Ionian Island of Corfu often remark on the similarities to parts of Italy, notably Venice.  There is a good historical reason for that; for over four centuries, strategically situated Corfu was the jewel in the crown of the Venetian Empire.  The fortress-island withstood two epic sieges by the Ottoman Empire in 1537 and 1716, in both cases rallying large pan-European interest in keeping the island out of Muslim hands.  Check out historic Corfu from above in this drone video by gkoutanoudisg.

Top contributor and first person view (FPV) drone pilot RobGrooveFpV earned a spot on the FPV Pilots to Watch list in January, 2024 with this outstanding 2023 highlight reel.  The video was primarily shot on Corfu and Paxos, two of the Greek islands of the Ionian Sea, just west of mainland Greece.  It features a nice mix of landscape, "cinewhoop" style indoor flights, and action shots, including some epic shots of BMX riders.  Highlights include a shot skimming over a marina, shots of ancient ruins and modern graffiti, and more.   

Poprto Timoni Beach is a well-known spot on the Greek island of Corfu, in the Ionian Sea west of mainland Greece.  Seen in this drone video by AirVuz contributor nikolov_kn, it's actually two beaches on either side of a narrow isthmus along a peninsula which extends from the northwestern coast of the island.  It's walking distance from the town of Afionas, one of the main settlements on the sparsely populated western side of the island (the island's main town, its namesake, lies on the eastern side of the island).  

The Greek island of Corfu in the Ionian Sea was one of the jewels of the Venetian Empire from the late Middle Ages through the time of Napoleon.  During this time, the island came under siege from the Ottoman Empire on multiple occasions, and Corfu was seen as a bulwark of Christianity in its bitter fight for mastery of the Mediterranean Sea against the forces of Islam.  In this drone video, you will get a bird's eye view of the area around the so-called "Old Fortress" of Corfu, on the eastern side of the island.  

Check out this stunning aerial tour of the Greek island of Lefkada, compliments of contributor and drone pilot Cata_Alex.  Lefkada is one of the larger of the seven main islands which sit to the west of the Greek mainland in the Ionian Sea.  It's the only one of the six which is physically connected to the mainland, via a causeway.  Closely connected to the Greek goddess of love, Aphrodite, the island was later the subject of a centuries-long tug-of-war between  the Venetian and Ottoman Empires in the Middle Ages and Early Modern periods.  

AirVuz contributor Drone AéroView brings us this excellent drone video of the town of Gaios, Greece.  Gaios is the principal port of the island of Paxos, the smallest of the seven main Greek islands of the Ionian Sea, west of the Greek mainland.  The town lies on the east coast of the island, which is situated just to the south of the larger island of Corfu.  Paxos covers a modest-sized area of about 10 square mi. (around 25 square km) and is about 10 mi. (around 16 km) from the Greek mainland at the closest point.  

Here's a drone video record of what looks like an epic road trip to Lefkada, the Greek island off the country's western coast.  The island is one of the most popular amongst the seven main islands that lie in the Ionian Sea.  The video features footage of Lefkada's beautiful beaches, as well as of some of the spots along the way dow the Balkan Peninsula: Serbia's resort town of Zlatibor, the Zlata Mountains, and the village of Sopotnica; and Lake Ohrid in Macedenia, one of the largest in Southeastern Europe.  

Kefalonia is the largest of the seven main islands that lie in the Ionian Sea west of mainland Greece.  The so called Seven Islands (Heptanese) constitute one of the most culturally distinctive regions of Greece; they were under control of the Venetian Empire for hundreds of years while the rest of modern Greece was part of the Ottoman Empire.  Contributor and pilot Georgetsivrassg used a Mavic Pro 2 to create this tour of Kefalonia, featuring footage of  Atheras, Lixouri, Lepeda, Xi Beach, and Petanoi.

Top contributor and pilot harispomonis created this stunning drone video of one of the world's top beaches.  It's called  Navagio Beach, aka Smuggler's Cove, and it lies on the north side of the Greek island of Zakynthos in the Ionian Sea.  It's famous in part because it's the home of the wreck of the MV Panagiotis, which ran aground here in 1980 after allegedly being chased by the Greek navy for suspected smuggling.  It became even more famous in 2018, when Lonely Planet named it the world's #1 beach.  

AirVuz contributor and first person view (FPV) drone pilot RobGrooveFpV brings us this fantastic FPV video from the famed Greek island of Corfu.  The video follows an Axopar 37 Sun Top Brabus Edition cruiser as it plies the waters around the Agia Pelagia area on the northern part of the island.  In addition to some spectacular "chase" type footage, the video features some amazing shots flying along the Corfu coastline.  The video concludes with a spectacular dive down a hill into a partially secluded cove.  

In this drone video by RobGroove, you'll get an aerial tour of the city of Corfu, one of the historical treasures of Greece.  The main city of its namesake island in the Ionian Sea west of the Greek mainland, Corfu dates to the Antiquity.  During the Middle Ages, it was one of the most important outposts of the Venetian Empire, which controlled much of the Ionian Sea.  Starting at about the :50 mark in the video, you'll see the city's Old Fortress, which played a key role in the centuries-long struggles against the Ottoman Empire.
