Mexico City from Above

Behold this spectacular drone video of Mexico City, fully decked out for Christmas 2018.  Award-winning content contributor and drone pilot Postandfly gives an astounding demonstration of the new DJI Mavic Pro 2 drone to create a stunning bird's eye view of the largest city in the Western Hemisphere as it prepares for the holiday.  Most of the video was shot around Zócalo, the main square in the center of the city, where a giant outdoor skating rink becomes part of the cityscape during the holiday season.

Multiple Drone Video of the Week/Month Winner Postandfly used the DJI Mavic Pro 3 and Mavic 3 Classic drones to create this stunning dronelapse compilation from Mexico City, the largest metropolitan area in North America.  The video opens with sequences looking towards the great volcanoes south of the city, and at the :30 mark you'll fly past the World Trade Center in the Colonia Nápoles neighborhood.  Other highlights include the skyscrapers of Cuauhtémoc (first seen at :54), the Angel of Independence (1:12), and more.  

Award-winning contributor Postandfly used a drone to document one of the darker sides of Mexico City: its pollution.  He flew a drone out over the Mexican capital on one of its worst air quality days yet, providing a compelling visual testament to the limits of urban growth.  The largest city in the Western Hemisphere, Mexico City's smog is a function not just of its size but the fact that it's in a valley surrounded by mountains.  It's a combination that can yield conditions like what you'll see here.

This is the third in the "trilogy" of Mexico City compiled by award-winning contributor Postandfly.  Like the two videos which proceeded it, it takes a balanced view of this gigantic metropolis of over 20 million souls.  It opens with some shots which show off the city's impressive skyline yet also highlight the terrible smog which often hangs over it.  As it shows both sides of this great city, one thing is consistent: Postandfly has captured some of the most amazing aerial footage of the Western Hemisphere's largest city.

For a first upload to AirVuz, new contributor and pilot PatricioOsGa brings us this rather haunting video from Mexico City, Mexico before and during the Covid-19 pandemic which began in the winter of 2020.  The video starts with footage from January, 2020, before the largest city in the Western Hemisphere recorded its first confirmed infections.  Then you'll fast-forward to March 30th, when what amounted to a national quarantine was declared; the VFX-enhaced of the empty looking city are truly (as the title suggests) dystopian.  

Award-winning contributor Postandfly used a DJI Mavic Pro 2 to create this stunning aerial video of the Tlatelolco area of Mexico City.  It's part of Cuauhtémoc, one of the northernmost of the city's 16 boroughs.   The video features excellent footage of one of the most recognizable landmarks of the neighborhood: the Torre Insignia.  When it was completed in 1962, the triangle-shaped tower was the city's second-tallest.  Located on the Avenida de los Insurgentes, it's currently being renovated. 

Award-winning contributor and drone pilot Postandfly collaborated with the Mexico City Airport authorities to create this amazing drone video of the busiest airport in Latin America.   The airport is served by nearly 50 airlines and typically processes over 100k passengers per day.  Located east of the center city, the airport is nearing capacity and a search for a replacement airport is underway.  Please note that this was done in full collaboration with the airport authorities and should NEVER be attempted otherwise.

Check out this stunning drone video of the Xochimilco District of Mexico City, compliments of AirVuz contributor supilotfly.  Located southeast of the core city center, Xochimilco was once an independent Aztec city that was slowly absorbed by the growth of Mexico City.  It lies on what was the southern shore of the Lake Xochimilco, which was subsequently drained to reduce flooding.  What remains of the lake is a vast network of canals which can be toured via gondola boats.    Xochimilco is a UNESCO World Heritage site.  

Contributor Inigui created this phenomenal drone video of showing the blend of old and new that is Mexico City.  The video opens with a shot of Chapultepec Castle, the only true "royal" castle in the Western Hemisphere.  It was built by the Spaniards who conquered Mexico on a sacred Aztec site.  The video then cuts to some epic aerial views of the city's newest skyscraper: Chapultepec Uno (left), which topped out at just over 240 meters (about 800 feet) and became the city's second tallest skyscraper.   

Top contributor Inigui created this stunning drone video of Mexico City's Avenue de la Reforma.  The video opens with an epic shot of the Angel of Independence (sometimes referred to simply as  El Ángel), a statue which was built in 1910 to commemorate the centenary of the Cry of Dolores, a call for Mexico's independence from Spain which was eventually achieved in 1821.  The video also features some of the skyscrapers that line this famous thoroughfare in the Western Hemisphere's largest city.     

Multiple DVOW Winner Postandfly brings us this magnificent VFX-enhanced aerial view of Mexico City.  The video opens with shots of the Torre BBVA skyscrapers and its immediate neighbors on the Paseo de la Reforma.  At the :25 mark, there's a nice shot of the Mítikah in the southern borough of Benito Juárez, which became the city's tallest when it was completed in 2021.  Other highlights include the Torre Latinoamericana (at the :28 mark), Chapultepec Castle (:35), the Angel of Independence (:38), the Zócalo square (:47), and more.    

Top contributor and pilot Inigui created this amazing drone video of one of Mexico City's most prominent skyscrapers dressed in orange for the Halloween holiday.  Completed in 2015, the BBVA Bancomer building (Torre BBVA Bancomer) is 50 stories and stands about 235 meters (770 ft.) at its rooftop.  As of year-end 2018, it was the third tallest building in the capital city and the fourth tallest in the entire country.  It's the headquarters for BBVA, the country's dominant banking institution.

Award-winning contributor Postandfly created this magnificent drone video of Chapultepec, the largest green space in Mexico City and one of the world's largest city parks.  It's situated across several districts of the Mexican capital, a bit west of the core downtown area.  The park is divided into three parts and covers 1.7k acres - that's about 8 square km or almost 3 square mi.  It's built on the site of an Ancient Aztec retreat and is home to a number of important cultural sites in addition to its extensive greenery.  

Mexico City is the capital of Mexico and its largest city.   The metropolitan area is home to over 21 million people as of 2018, making it the largest urban area in the Americas.  The city was built on the Aztec city of Tenochtitlan, which was largely destroyed by Spanish conquerors following a lengthy siege in 1521.  In this drone video, AirVūz contributor @emotiondrones soars through the city's highly modern central business district at night, providing an epic view of its many skyscrapers.  

Contributor Rentaundrone collaborated with the prestigious New York Times to create this amazing four minute aerial tour of Mexico City, the largest urban area in the Western Hemisphere.  Highlights include epic bird's eye views of the Palace of Fine Arts, the Angel of Independence Monument, and other sights around the city.  The highlight is probably the footage of the Zócalo Square, beinning at 2:00; this was the primary filming location for the opening scene of the 26th James Bond movie, Spectre (2015).   

Multiple Drone Video of the Week Winner oculusfilms brings us this fantastic drone video from Mexico City's Polanco District.  It located in the borough of Miguel Hidalgo in the northwestern part of the city, a bit north of Chapultepec Park.  First developed in the 1930's, the Polanco District is one of the most upscale neighborhoods in this sprawling metropolis, and indeed in all of Mexico.  Home to some of the city's most expensive restaurants, hotels, and shops, it's sometimes called the "Beverly Hills of Mexico".  

Check out this "golden hour" drone video of Mexico City, compliments of top content creator and pilot Inigui.  Much of the video focuses on the city's four tallest buildings, which are located next to each other in the city's central business district on the Paseo de la Reforma: the Torre Reforma, the Chapultepec Uno R509, the Torre BBVA Bancomer, and the Torre Mayor.  The first three buildings were built during the city's 2010's building boom; the fourth predated them by a about a decade.    

Contributor Normal Mexican Guy created this beautiful drone video of an important thoroughfare in Mexico City, the largest city in the Western Hemisphere.  Avenue of the Insurgents (Avenida de los Insurgentes) is one of the main north-south roads running through the city.  The area filmed is in the southern stretch of the avenue, heading north and then back through some of the city's densest areas.  The street is named after the insurgents who eventually won Mexico's independence from Spain in 1821.  

For a first upload to AirVuz, new contributor hiram_ha brings us this excellent drone video from Mexico City, the largest urban center in the Western Hemisphere.  Shot with a DJI Mavic Air 2 drone, the focus of the video is on two of the city's most well-known spots.  The first is the Torre Latinoamericana, a 44 story skyscraper which became Mexico's tallest when it was completed in 1956 until being surpassed in 1982.  The second prominently featured location is the Zócalo, the city's largest public square.  

Contributor Normal Mexican Guy created this amazing drone video of some of the southern areas of Mexico City, Mexico.  The areas filmed are in the Narvarte, Del Valle, and Nápoles neighborhoods, which lie more or less due south from the CDMX central district.  The centerpiece of the video is some epic footage of the World Trade Center Mexico City.  Built in 1972, the 50-story mixed-use building has a roof height of 191 meters (627 ft.), making it the city's sixth-tallest as of early 2019.

Contributor Reed Rickert created this beautiful video of the central district of Mexico City.  The focus of the video is the Torre Latinoamericana, one of the city's most recognizable landmarks.  Built in 1956, the 45 story tower stands just over 180 meters (just under 600 ft.) tall.  While it's only the #8 building by height (as of early 2019), it has the distinction of being the first skyscraper built in an active seismic zone, and its performance during the devastating earthquake of 1985 is considered examplary.    

Lienzoenelaire created this brilliant drone video of the landmark Torre Latinoamericana skyscraper in Mexico City.  Built in 1956, the 45 story building stands 182 meters (just under 600 ft.) at its rooftop.  While it's only the 8th highest building in the city as of 2018, it was the tallest building in Mexico for nearly three decades.  Notably, it was the first modern skyscraper to endure a major earthquake: the 1985 quake, which registered 8.1 on the Richter Scale and killed thousands, left the building unscathed.  

Jacaranda mimosifolia is a species of tree that is native to south-central South America. However, its beautiful periwinkle purple and blue bloom has made it a poplar plant in other parts of the world. The roughly two-week bloom lights up the Mexico City, Mexico metropolis, splashing the city with its vibrant foliage like a paint brush splashing a canvas.  Drone pilot and AirVuz Drone Video Awards' nominee inigui couldn’t resist capturing its beauty in this short, aerial video. 

In this drone video by Normal Mexican Guy, you'll get an aerial tour of Mexico City, focusing on the impressive skyscrapers of the largest urban area in the Western Hemisphere.  The video opens with a shot of the Torre Latinoamericana, the city's tallest from 1956 to 1982.  At around the :50 mark, you'll get an overhead view of the city's three tallest buildings as of 2019: the 57 story Torre Reforma (244 meters, 801 ft.) which was completed in 2016; the Torre BBVA Bancomer; and the Torre Mayor.  

For a first upload to AirVuz, new contributor supilotfly brings us this excellent drone video of two of the most well-known landmarks in from Mexico City: the Angel of Independence statue (El Ángel) and the Latin American Tower.  The statue, which is located in a roundabout on the Paseo de la Reforma Paseo, was completed in 1910 to mark the centenary of the beginning of the Mexican War of Independence.  The 545 ft. (166 m) tower, also known as Torre Latinoamericana, became the city's tallest skyscraper when it was completed in 1956.  

Nomade World used a drone to record some epic hiking around two of Mexico's most famous volcanoes. Popocatépetl and Iztaccihuatl are neighboring mountains which loom over Mexico City from the south.  They are the country's #2 and #3 highest peaks, respectively, Popocatépetl (which is still active) having an altitude of 5.4k meters (17.8k ft.).  They are possibly the most famous stratovolcanoes in literature; both mountains feature prominently in Malcolm Lowry's 1947 classic Under the Volcano.

As one of the world's largest cities, Mexico city depends upon its Metro train system to move people about the giant metropolis.  With its first lines completed in 1969, it now runs about 225 km in total (around 135 mi.) and serves nearly 200 stations.  Based on track length and ridership, it's the second-largest system in the Western Hemisphere after New York City and one of the ten largest in the world.  In this drone video by jcreynoso, you'll get a glimpse of the Metro, which carried 1.6 billion passengers in 2018.

Check out these amazing aerial views of Mexico City, compliments of contributor c13studio.  The video was shot from Parque México, one of the most well known parks in this gigantic city.  The park is located in the Condesa, the southwestern district of the city.  The park was developed in the 1920's and was designed to resemble the great European parks.  The video affords nice views of the park and its immediate surroundings, as well as of the skyscrapers of the central CDMX district.  

Content creator and pilot Normal Mexican Guy created this fascinating drone video of the Virgilio Uribe rowing course in the Xochimilco District south of central Mexico City.  It runs through a series of canals here which are vestiges from the extensive lake system which covered much of the Valley of Mexico in Pre-Columbian times but which was drained by the Spanish to control floods.  Famously, the course was used as the venue for rowing events when Mexico City hosted the 1968 Summer Olympics.  

Check out the amazing coloring in this beautiful drone video from Mexico City by top contributor inigui.  The subject is the Monument to the Revolution (Monumento a la Revolución), one of the most important cultural sights in this great city.  Completed in the early 1900's, it's situated in the Plaza de la República.  The building was originally intended to be the Federal Legislative Palace but it was never completed as such and a few decades later it was converted to a monument to the Mexican Revolution.  

The Mexico City Marathon has been running since 1983, and has increasingly become an international competition. The race begins at the Benito Juárez Hemicycle monument on the Alameda Central Park, runs along the Paseo de la Reforma and past the Torre Mayor (twice) before heading west on the Avenida de los Insurgentes to the finish line at the Estadio Olímpico Universitario. In this drone video by Normal Mexican Guy, you'll get a bird's eye view of the race along the Avenida de los Insurgentes.

Smog is choking Mexico City. To some extent, it's inevitable: this is the largest city in the Western Hemisphere, and it's mostly surrounded by mountains which tends to trap dirty air over the city.  In 2019, due mostly to some unusual weather patterns, the city had some of its worst smog days to date.  It's a significant public health issue, and the extent of the problem is skillfully captured in this drone video of the city known as CDMX on a particularly smoggy day by top contributor inigui.  

One of the landmarks  of Mexico City's colonial history is the equestrian statue of Charles (Carlos) IV of Spain.  Completed in 1803, just a few years before Mexico declared its independence from Spain, the bronze statue is situated in the heart of Mexico's capital and populous city.  Seen in this drone video by Avemkite, It commemorates Spanish King Charles (Carlos) IV, who sat on the throne when the Western Hemisphere lands of the Spanish Empire disintegrated into independent sovereign countries through a series of revolutions.  

Check out this fantastic drone video of Mexico City by AirVuz contributor and pilot Avemkite.  The focus of the video is the cluster of skyscrapers located in the heart of the Cuauhtémoc District.  The Torre Reforma, the Chapultepec Uno R509, the Torre BBVA, and the Torre Mayor are situated within a block of each other on the Paseo de Reforma, just a few blocks southwest of the Angel of Independence.  They are the city's four tallest buildings as of 2021; completed in 2016, the 57 story Torre Reforma stands 246 meters or 807 ft.    

Mexico City is home to nearly ten million within its legal territory, and it's the center of a metropolitan area of well over 20 million - the largest in the Western Hemisphere.  As the city has grown and become more prosperous, its vehicle fleet has mushroomed - according to a 2018 study, the vehicle population of the city grew by over 600% since the turn of the century.  With the road infrastructure unable to keep up with the vehicle growth, the city faces epic traffic jams like what you'll see from above in this drone video by Normal Mexican Guy.

Award-winning contributor and drone pilot Postandfly used a DJI Mavic Pro 2 drone to create this stunning aerial video of the new Diablos Rojos Stadium in Mexico City.  It's the home of the Mexico City Red Devils (Diablos Rojos del México), a Triple-A minor league baseball team which is part of the Mexican League.  Since their founding in 1940, they have been the league's dominant team, with 16 championships.   The stadium, which has 13,000 covered seats, hosts its first game in March, 2019.

Award-winning contributor Postandfly created this spectacular drone video of a side of Mexico City most never knew existed. Xochimilco is a southern borough of the Federal District, the city's metropolitan administrative region.   Located south of the core city center,  Xochimilco began its life as an independent Aztec city, known for a vast network of canals.  With the growth of the capital city, it became essentially a vast suburb of Mexico City, yet one which has a highly distinctive and visually appealing look.  

Top contributor inigui created this gorgeous sunrise drone video of Mexico City's Polanco District at sunrise.  Located just north of Chapultepec Park, Polanco is the most upscale of the capital city's districts, and is sometimes called the Beverly Hills of Mexico City.  The district began to be developed in the 1930's, with some of the city's first department stores opening here.  Now it has some of the most expensive land in the city, which complicates further development because of height restrictions in the district.
