Located southeast of the core city center, Xochimilco was once an independent Aztec city that was slowly absorbed by the growth of Mexico City. It lies on what was the southern shore of the Lake Xochimilco, which was subsequently drained to reduce flooding. What remains of the lake is a vast network of canals which can be toured via gondola boats. Xochimilco is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
