Afghanistan is the southernmost of the countries which comprise Central Asia. The country has been the scene of heartrending devastation over the last several decades, first from a war following the invasion by the USSR in 1979, and more recently from USA military intervention directed at suppressing Islamic terrorism. Nevertheless, it is widely considered to be one of the world's most beautiful countries. The landlocked country spans over 650k square km (about 250k square mi.), making it roughly comparable to the USA state of Texas. The southern part of the country is mostly desert, while much of the northern part is covered by the Hindu Kush range, home of some of the world's highest mountains.
