One of China's northernmost cities as well as one of its coldest, its nickname is the Ice City.

Harbin City - Capital of Heilongjiang The International Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival is a major event held annually in the city of Harbin in Heilongjiang Province. The event is Harbin's main attraction and has been gaining popularity in recent years. About Harbin is the capital of Heilongjiang, the northernmost province in China. The city developed in the late 19th century, following the mass arrival of Russian engineers who came to build the eastern portion of the Trans-Siberian Railway. Among the typical Russian architecture buildings is the Saint Sophia Cathedral, a green-domed Eastern Orthodox church that now serves as a museum of local history.
