The province is the northernmost of the five that comprise the autonomous region of Castilla-La Mancha, which is (along with Castile & Leon to its northwest) one of the two core regions of central Spain. This area was under Muslim rule for a time but beginning in the 11th century was re-conquered by Christianity in the form of the Kingdom of Castile, part of the process leading to the emergence of modern Spain.
