Castillo de Luque (Luque, Córdoba, España)

The Castle of Luque is located in Cerro del Castillo, next to the Hermitage of the Rosary, in the locality of Luque, a couple of minutes from the impressive Church of Our Lady of the Assumption.

The fortress is located on a cliff at whose feet is the town of Luque.

The fortress is made up of two towers, one to the north and one to the south-east, with a semi-enclosed enclosure, joined by various wall-paintings that today are in a state of ruin.

The most important element of the castle is the tower, this one is in the extreme north and occupies a surface of 12 × 7 m. Its outer walls have a thickness of 1.90 m and have two floors, each compartmentalized in two rooms or chambers.

Access to the ground floor from the patio by a hollow made in the southeast wall topped in us interior by dome of flaring brick and whose difference of 1.20 m. Would be saved by a ramp or staircase now missing.

After this entrance, we find a kind of landing from which a staircase to the upper floor begins, from which some steps still remain; On the other side there is a hole that served as lateral support to the staircase and entrance door to the rooms of the ground floor that are separated by a toral arc half a brick, supporting the missing brick vaults of the plant floor higher.

With roof of brick vaults is the top floor, with the same distribution as the ground floor, although this has holes in the northwest wall to beat the esplanade, and the northeast wall to give light and ventilation to the staircase.

The fort was built by order of Muhammad I towards the year 879.
