Fortress of Chocim (Khotyn)

AirVuz contributor PL-UA History by Drone brings us this excellent drone video of a famous medieval fortress in Ukraine.  Khotyn Fortress is located on the right (eastern) bank of the Dneister River, in the western oblast (province) of Chernivtsi.  Originally dating to the 14th century, the complex played an important role in the centuries-long struggle for control of the historical region of Bessarabia, which involved (at various times) the Ottoman and Russian Empires, the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, Romania, the USSR, and others.

Fortress of Chocim (Khotyn), currently located in Ukraine. Video created within "PL-UA. History by drone" project. The fortress of Chocim (Khotyn, currently in Ukraine) was founded in 15th century by Moldavian Hospodar Stephen III the Great to replace the former fortifications built by the Ruthenian rulers. The fortress lies on the Dniester River and often was passed from power to power as an important border stronghold, with new owners introducing improvements. Here, exactly 400 years ago in 1621, the army of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth repulsed a major invasion by the Ottoman Empire. An enormous number of people took part in the battle lasting several weeks, with as many as 300,000 combatants.
