One of the largest fortresses in Europe, it sits atop a hill overlooking the Elbe River near Dresden, in Saxony. Situated in an important river location near the border with historical Czech lands, the fortress dates to the 13th century and has been enlarged many times. It's one of the largest tourist attractions in the former East Germany.
