Madeira is a small archipelago territory of Portugal, located off the coast of North Africa. It's one of the seven official regions of the country. It consists of the main island of Madeira, the smaller island of Porto Santo, and two small sub-groups of small islands. The main island is the above-water tip of a giant volcano. Madeira was discovered in the early 15th century by captains who were in the service of Prince Henry the Navigator. Along with the Azores, Madeira represents the last remnant of the Portuguese Empire, one of the largest in the world at one point.
