Bird's Eye Views of Greenland

Top AirVuz contributor FADAH_FPV earned a Drone Video of the Week Finalist spot for this fantastic drone video of humpback whales off the coast of Greenland, the world's largest island.  Humpbacks are one of about 15 different whale species which are frequently found in Greenland's coastal waters as part of their annual migration patterns.  They can grow as long as 56 ft. (17 m) in length and can weigh up to about 45 tons.  The video was filmed with a first person view (FPV) drone as well as a DJI Mavic 3.  

Multiple Drone Video of the Week Winner T-christ-T brings us this stunning drone video from Greenland, the world's largest island.  The video was filmed over and around Scoresby Sound (Kangertittivaq in Greenlandic), which is a large fjord system located about halfway down Greenland's long eastern coastline, well inside the Arctic Circle.  One of the largest and most extensive such systems in the world, the area around the sound is virtually uninhabited - the sole settlement in the region has a population of less than 500.  

Greenland is one of the world's natural wonders.  Part of Denmark, the world's largest island covers 836k square mi. Award-winning content creator Florian Ledeaux created this stunning drone video of Greenland, the world's largest island, which is part of the territory of Denmark in the North Atlantic Ocean.  Sailing around Greenland and towards northern Canada, he used his drone to create a breathtaking aerial view of massive icebergs, walruses, Beluga whales, and even unicorn-like Narwhal.   An avid environmentalist, Ledoux aims to use his videos to illustrate the fragility of the eco-system to climate change. 

Top AirVuz contributor Peter Barthelson was a Finalist for the Drone Video of the Week and also made the FPV Pilots to Watch list with this spectacular first person view (FPV) video from Greenland.  Working on a research vessel, he was able to use his FPV quad to film a field of giant icebergs as they floated away from a fjord on the giant island's eastern coastline.  The icebergs are the progeny of the Greenland Ice Sheet, a massive icecap that covers about 80% of Greenland and is the source of most icebergs in the Northern Hemisphere. 

This drone video will strike a chord with you right off the bat. Award winning aerial photographer and videographer Florian Ledoux used drone and ground camera footage to create this remarkable video of arctic foxes in Greenland, also known as the world's largest island.  This species is native to arctic environments.  These small foxes are extremely hardy creatures - they can survive in temperatures up to 90-100 degrees lower than their core temperature.  Mr. Ledoux's video captures a group of these foxes playing onshore against a backdrop of a massive iceberg field.

Award-winning contributor, nature photographer, and drone pilot Florian Ledoux created this stunning aerial video of the vast iceberg fields of East Greenland.  Greenland holds particular interest for him due to its potential damage from global warming: if the vast Greenland ice sheet were to melt at once, it would raise the global sea level by over 7 meters (24 ft.) and wash away many of the world's coastal cities.  Ride along for this fascinating view of a spot in the cross-hairs of global warming.  

Virtually all of Greenland's towns are located on its western coastline.  One of these is Ilulissat.  With a population of about 4,500, it's the largest town in the Avannaata region, which covers the northern part of the island's western coast.  In this stunning drone video by inva+sla, you'll get a bird's eye view of the extensive iceberg population which inhabit the waters off of the coast near the town.  The icebergs are produced by Greenland's massive ice sheet, the world's largest outside of the poles. 

Just as Iceland has become something of a magnet for adventuresome first person view (FPV) drone pilots, the much larger (but far less-traveled) island of Greenland is coming onto the collective radar of the worldwide FPV community.  In this stunning piece by AirVuz contributor and FPV pilot Benjamin_Fpv, you'll see why.  The video was filmed over Scoresby Sound, which is located about midway down Greenland's eastern coast and which is home to a system of fjords.  This video was picked for the FPV Pilots to Watch list in September, 2022.  

After Nazi Germany invaded and quickly conquered Denmark in the early part of World War II, the US seized the gigantic Danish territory known as the island of Greenland as a protective measure. Once the US joined the war and was fighting the Battle of the Atlantic, it decided to establish a base called Bluie East Two near the town of Ikateq on the island's eastern coast.  The base was essentially abandoned after the war, leaving the eerie scene which you'll see in this amazing drone video by sfdrones.  

AirVuz contributor Peter Barthelson was working on a research vessel in Greenland when he spotted a pair of whales moving about in the icebergs off the giant island's eastern coast.  He was able to get his FPV drone up in time to film the beautiful creatures, who seemed unaware of the presence of the drone.  The whales, which he believes were mother and calf humpbacks, stayed in place long enough for him to create this stunning video.   At least 15 different whale species can be found off the coast of the world's largest island.  

Explore the coast of Greenland in this excellent drone video by former Drone Video of the Week Finalist rbendjebar.  The video was filmed during the course of a nine day trip around the Scoresby Sound (Scoresby Sund), which is a large system of fjords located about halfway down the island's long eastern coastline.  The title of the video suggests just how far north this is - 71 degrees north latitude, hundreds of miles/kilometers north of the Arctic Circle (which lies at about 66.6 degrees north latitude).  

Check out these stunning drone views of Greenland, compliments of AirVuz contributor Gunberg Lange.  The video was filmed near the town of Nanortalik, which lies near the southern tip of the world's largest island (a territory of Denmark).  While the population of Nanortalik barely exceeds 1k, it's nonetheless one of the dozen largest settlements on the giant island, which covers a territory of 836k square mi. (just under 2.2 million square km), larger than the combined areas of the US states of Alaska and Texas.  

A coastal town in western Greenland, Ilulissat is an Arctic gem. Its pink sunrises and sunsets, clean white glaciers, and Northern Lights, seen in this drone video by fpl1966, make it something to remember. In fact, the town's name translates to "iceberg" in Kalaallisut - Greenland's native language. The Ilulissat Iceberg, the most popular iceberg in the area, was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004.  It's located about 350 km (around 220 mi.) north of the Arctic Circle.  

The gigantic island of Greenland is a drone cinematographer's dream location. With natural beauty on display everywhere, epic sunsets and sunrises, minimal human disruption, and rare access it's no wonder great videos shot on the island of ice are hard to come by. Check out this amazing 4k drone video from the Ilulissat Icefjord of western Greenland, compliments of contributor and pilot AnneSofie.  Running west from the Greenland Ice Sheet, the Ilulissat is fed by the Jakobshavn Glacier, considered one of the most productive in the Northern Hemisphere.  The icebergs which are calved off and float into the fjord can be enormous - up to 1k meters tall or about 3.3k ft.  The largest are too tall for the relatively shallow sea and can be stuck on the bottom for many years before floating free.

AirVuz contributor Gunberg Lange brings us this magnificent drone video from the massive island of Greenland.  The video was filmed over the Ilulissat Icefjord, which lies in the central part of Greenland's long western coastline.  The fjord, which empties into Disko Bay (an inlet of Baffin Bay) is the terminus of the Jacobshavn Glacier, one of the world's most prodigious producers of icebergs.  It's an outlet of the Greenland Ice Sheet, the largest ice sheet in the world outside of Antarctica.  

Top AirVuz contributor haussmannvisuals brings us a very rare first person view (FPV) drone perspective of Greenland, the world's largest island.  The video was filmed over the Ilulissat Icefjord, a fjord on Greenland's western coast.  The fjord is fed by the Jakobshavn Glacier, which produces about 10% of all the icebergs produced by Greenland.  It's located about 150 mi. (around 250 km) north of the Arctic Circle.  Due to its ecological importance, the Ilulissat Icefjord has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site.  

AirVuz contributor and drone pilot Bdfilms.co.uk brings us this amazing aerial video from the very southern tip of the gigantic island of Greenland.  Prince Christian Sound separates the mainland of Greenland from the islands of the Cape Farewell Archipelago.  Being at the southern extremity of Greenland, it's actually a fairly temperate latitude, approximately level with Scotland and well south of Iceland and mainland Scandinavia.  As you will see from the video, the area offers spectacular natural scenery.

Contributor Wrenee, aka the Queen of the Dronie, gives us her trademark pull-out shot from Disko Island off the western coast of Greenland.  Disko is the second-largest island of Greenland after the island of Greenland itself, the world's largest.  Disko, which is situated in Baffin Bay, is actually itself one of the world's 100 largest islands.  Disko has a population of about 1,000, making it the second most populated island of Greenland, which is governed as a semi-autonomous region of Denmark.

Known for his nature and wildlife photography, Florian Ledoux chats with Tyler in this episode of The Drone Dish. Most of his work takes him to Arctic locations like Greenland and Canada's Federal Territories where he has captured epic aerials of polar bears, narwhals, and gigantic icebergs.  One of his aerial photos from the Arctic was featured in the seminal Time magazine special report entitled "The Drone Age", and his video "I am Fragile" was selected as a finalist in the second Drone Video Awards.
