In courtship, the couple performs festoon flights or launches prey in flight. In this period the young of the previous year's brood is pushed away from the parents, even in an aggressive manner. Before egg-laying, the pair builds or renovates the nest with both dry and fresh fronds and branches that they tear directly from the trees with their claws. The use of fresh branches, in addition to camouflaging the nest, seems to signal to other eagles that that territory is occupied. In Sardinia the nests are built mainly on sheer rock faces, but also - rarely - in trees.
Elegant flight, usually gliding and circling.
Male individuals can reach 75 cm in length and weigh 3-3.50 kg, while females are slightly larger and reach approximately 90 cm in length and a weight varying between 4 and 6.50 kg.
The wingspan can exceed two meters.
A bird of prey truly evocative of the ideals of power, freedom, elegance, dignity: it flies imposingly and majestically and during the vault it raises its wings to form a very open "V". Its characteristic festooned flight is used to defend its territory but also in courtship... in spiral flight it exploits the ascending thermal currents; the hunting flight is instead at low altitude, skirting the sides of the mountains, scanning with its acute vision in search of prey. It reaches considerable altitudes: then in a dive the speed of the Golden Eagle can exceed 250 km/h up to the limit of 300 km/h.Zoogeographic origin: HolarcticDistribution area:The golden eagle is present on practically all the main mountain massifs of the island. It is a sedentary species that often goes beyond its preferred habitat in the winter period.Identification:It is recognized by the large dimensions that characterize adult specimens. Elegant flight, usually gliding and circling. It hovers with rare wing beats and holding the wings slightly forward. The plumage of male specimens is dark brown with slight reddish shades, the greyish-brown flight feathers barred with dark and a light and slightly golden color on the head and neck. At close range, a dark margin is visible at the rear wing edge. Middle part of the coverts slightly golden. In the proximal 2/3 the tail appears greyish with dark bars; wide dark terminal band. The underparts are uniformly dark brown.
