Brisbane now sprawls north towards the Sunshine Coast and south towards the Gold Coast. To the east it is a series of commuter suburbs edging Moreton Bay. They all lie between the mainland and Stradbroke Island.

One of the most significant coastal settlements is Cleveland which, because it was once promoted as the future capital of the state, is now an important coastal town with a number of historic buildings and a delightful walk along the coast. It is recognized as the main access point for people wanting to explore North Stradbroke Island.

Our drone take off point was G.J. Walter Park which was originally proclaimed a reserve by the Government on 13 March 1889. This area is mainly used by residents and day trippers for swimming, picnicking and general park use. This area is included on the Redland City Council's Register of Heritage Places classified as being of local significance.

Moreton Bay and its surrounding islands are Brisbane's very own marine park only 25km out of the city centre. The area is recognized as one of the best whale watching spots in the world as the annual migration lures thousands of the ocean giants down the coast. Moreton Bay is a Ramsar site because of its outstanding coastal wetland values and features. Many of its diverse habitat types retain a near-natural character and are interconnected with other habitats supporting biodiversity.

North Stradbroke Island or Straddie (to the locals) is known for some of the most spectacular scenery found anywhere in Australia. Straddie is the 2nd largest sand island in the world. An ideal holiday destination, the island is famous for its scenic headlands, freshwater lakes, rolling surf, sand dunes and endless white sandy beaches. Three little townships on the island provide a relaxed village atmosphere – with Point Lookout being the best land-based whale-watching site in the world.
