The Netherlands offers some of the most iconic winter scenery in Europe. While the (mostly) dead-flat landscapes of the North European Plain generally preclude skiing, it's a paradise for ice-skating as well as more adventurous action sports which take advantage of its wide-open frozen expanses. It's also simply beautiful, whether it be the windmills of the Zaanse Schans region west of Amsterdam or its colorful medieval towns.
