While coal-fired plants now provide less than 20% of the country's electricity supply, the massive amounts of lignite mined to date have fundamentally transformed the landscape of former coal-producing areas. Lakes of incredible shades, and the desert, rugged by cracks, and rocky mountains, and trees, rooted deep into the clay shell. This unusual place has many names - it was formed in the 60s due to open-pit mining of brown coal, the deposits of which came close to the surface.
