Ljubljana Castle sits atop a hill in the city, which lies in the middle of the country. It dates to the 11th century, and was originally a fortress. In the 16th and 17th centuries it was largely rebuilt as a classic castle - ie, a residence. It overlooks the downtown of the city and is the largest tourist destination in the capital.
