Ribeira do Miño

The banks of the Miño River as it flows through Ribeira Sacra offer a peaceful landscape of deciduous forests interspersed with numerous small vineyards. The river also forms many curves, cutting into the land and creating characteristic meanders.

In the southwest of the province of Lugo lies one of the most distinctive areas of the Miño River. Over time, thanks to erosion and geological movements, the Miño River has carved a considerable gorge into this area.

The slopes of the Miño are dedicated to viticulture, interspersed, depending on their orientation, with deciduous forests and pine plantations. As in other surrounding areas, wine production has always been of great importance here. In each vineyard, it is quite common to discover small stone cellars that house the delicious wines produced here. When autumn arrives, the colors of the forests and vineyards combine to create a truly beautiful landscape.

But not everything noteworthy about the banks of the Miño River is above water. Beneath the surface lie numerous villages that were submerged after the construction of the Belesar and Os Peares reservoirs. In some cases, the most important buildings of these villages were transported stone by stone up the hill to preserve them.

It's possible to explore almost every corner of this area in many ways: by car, on foot, or on a relaxing catamaran trip to admire it from within.
