A comparative infant by Russian standards, Novosibirsk was founded in 1893 as the crossing-point for the Trans-Siberian Railroad over the Ob River. During Soviet times, the city became a major industrial center, with many factories relocated here following the Nazi invasion of the USSR in 1941.
