The Bay is created by the Mobile River, and is one of the finest natural harbors on the Gulf. The Port of Mobile at its head is one of the largest bulk cargo ports in the United States. At its peak during the pre-Civil War years, Mobile was one of the most important ports in the world and critical to feeding cotton into England during the early phases of the Industrial Revolution.
