Hochosterwitz castle is built on a giant rock overlooking the countryside in the southern state of Carinthia. The structure dates to as early as the 9th century. The castle was heavily fortified in the 16th century to protect against the threat of invasion by the Ottoman Turks. Considered one of the top tourist spots in southern Austria, the castle is visible from many km/mi away.
