Check out this stunning DVOW nominated video from Bologna, Italy, compliments of Jackanda.  Featuring stunning aerial footage of the city and its surrounding hills, the video was taken during the Covid-19 pandemic, when social distancing measures left the streets of the ancient Emilia-Romagna capital city virtually empty.  The ER region, which covers much of north-central Italy, was particularly hard-hit during the pandemic; only the Piedmont and Lombardy regions recorded more infections and deaths.

The famed misty hills of Italy's Emilia-Romagna region are on full display here in the magnificent drone video by contributor Rikk08.  The video was shot in two spots: Bologna and Ferrara.  The former is the regional capital, lying in the province of the same name.  It's Italy's seventh largest city, and was one of the largest cities in Europe during the Middle Ages.  Ferrara is the capital of the eponymously named province, which lies in the northeast part of the region, on a branch of the Po River.

Check out this short-but-stunning dronelapse sequence from northern Italy, compliments of contributor lucadadici.  He used a DJI Inspire 2 drone to create an amazing 30 second shot over the hills of Parma.  Parma is one of the nine provinces which make up the region of Emilia-Romagna that covers much of the northern part of the "boot" of Italy.  Like most of the other ER provinces, its southern portion is covered by the Apennine Mountains, which form the natural boundary with Tuscany.

Top contributor Nathan Jermy used a DJI Mavic Pro 2 drone to create this stunning aerial video of the city-state of San Marino.  This beautiful city is one of the political oddities of Europe.  While it is completely surrounded by Italian territory (specifically, the Emilia-Romaga Region in the north-central part of the country), it is a sovereign country.  Its population of under 35,000 makes it the smallest of the 47 members of the Council of Europe.  Of all the European countries, only Vatican City and Monaco are smaller.

Contributor Mark59 created this stunning drone video of Canossa, a castle town in the province of Reggio Emilia in north-central Italy.  The 10th century castle is the site of one of the most famous events of the Middle Ages.  In January, 1077, Holy Roman Emperor Henry IV arrived here after a long trek to meet with Pope Gregory VII, who was a guest at the castle.  Seeking a reversal of his ex-communication, Henry was forced to stand in the snow at the castle gates for three days before being granted a papal audience.

Some of the most beautiful sights of Italy's Emilia-Romagna region are in the province of Reggio Emilia, the third-westernmost of the eight provinces which make up the region of northern Italy.  Set in the foothills of the Apennine Mountains, the province is home to some great cultural treasures.  In this video, you'll see the magnificent castle town of Canossa, as well as the town of Carpineti.  Both of these towns lie less than an hour's drive west of the regional capital Bologna.

Montepastore is a small town near Bologna, Italy.  Like Bologna, it's part of the Emilia-Romagna region of the country, which covers much of the northern part of the "boot" of Italy.  It's in the hilly-to-mountainous part of the province, in the Apennine Mountains which run in a series of chains down much of central Italy.  The town has a population of about 500.  In this video, you'll get a bird's eye view of this magnificent landscape, on a glorious day when the hilltops are covered in fog.

Here's a great aerial video of two important castles in the Emilia-Romagna region of northern Italy, compliments of contributor Dronescapes by Atellani.  Both are in Piacenza, the westernmost province of the ER region.  The first is the 11th-12th century Castle of Vigoleno, which is located in the commune of Vernasca.  In the 1980's it was used as a filming location for the movie Lady Hawke starring Michelle Pfeiffer.  The second landmark is Castell'Arquato.  Located about 30 km (around 20 mi.) from the first castle, it dates to the 10th century.

Contributor Mavic67 used a DJI Mavic Pro drone to create this magnificent aerial view of the area around Monte Sillara in northern Italy.  Monte Sillara is the highest peak in the Apennine sub-range of the Apennine Mountains.  It's located in Parma, the westernmost of the provinces which make up the Emilia-Romagna region.  Near the peak of the 1.8k meter (about 6.1k ft.) mountain are two glacial lakes: Lake Sillara Superiore and the Lake Sillara Inferiore, both of which you'll see in the video.

Take an aerial tour of the Italian city of Modena in this exellent drone video by top contributor Luca T.  The video opens with a shot of the Ghirlandina, the bell tower of the Cathedral of Modena.  At the :17 mark, there's another shot of the tower, and at around :34 you'll see the Ducal Palace.  Starting at about :50, there's a single-shot first person view (FPV) flyover of the city, with a great shot of the Town Hall at around 1:11.  The capital of its namesake province, Modena is one of the larger cities in the Emilia-Romagna region.

The Sanctuary of the Madonna di San Luca sits on top of the hills in Bologna, the largest city in the Emilia-Romagna Region of northern Italy. Built in the Baroque style and opened in 1765, the site was home to a different church or chapel for over a thousand years before the current church was commissioned. Drone pilot enricocif does a splendid job of showing the unique and historic cathedral from above in this aerial piece, which also features footage of the nearby Oratory of Saints Cecilia and Valeriano.

Here's an awesome aerial view of a pass through the Apennine Mountains in northern Italy, compliments of contributor and drone pilot Mavic67.  Cirone is a pass through the Italian Apennines, a mountain range that runs most of the way down the spine of the country in a series of chains or sub-ranges.  In this particular spot, the pass connects two of the country's most important regions: Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna.  The two regions share a long border which sits over the Apennine peaks for the most part.

Here is a spectacular aerial video of some climbers tackling one of Italy's best-known rock climbing spots.  It's called Pietra di Bismantova, and it's what's known as an inselberg - basically, an isolated rock formation.  It's located in the north-central part of the country, in the province of Reggio Emilia which is part of the Emilia-Romagna Region.  It certainly hasn't hurt that this giant plateau earned mention in Dante's Divine Comedy, perhaps the single most well known work of medieval literature.

Contributor Luca T. created this nice aerial view of Rivalta Castle in northern Italy.  It's located in Piacenza, which is the westernmost province of the Emilia-Romagna region.  The castle is situated in a town of the same name a short distance to the southwest of the provincial capital city, on the banks of the Trebbia River.  The castle dates to the 11th century and was rebuilt as a baronial estate in the 15th century.  The great landmark lies in the foothills of the Apennine Mountains.

Check out this outstanding drone video of a 15th century Italian castle, compliments of Never Stop Exploring.  Torrechiara is located in Parma, one of the provinces of the north-central region of Emilia Romagna.  Overlooking the Parma River, the structure played a defensive role and also served as the residence of a mistress of an Italian nobleman named Pier Maria II de' Rossi.  Damaged by an earthquake in 2008, it was re-opened to the public in 2014.  It was used to film the 1985 movie Ladyhawke starring Matthew Broderick.

The city of Bologna is considered one of the great cultural treasures of Italy.  It's the capital of the Emilia-Romagna region in the north-central part of the country.  What's less appreciated though is the areas just outside of the city which are home to some of the world's most unusual rock formations.  In this drone video by enricocif, you'll get a bird's eye view of the Parco della Abbadessa e Castello Machiavelli.  The park sits in the hills outside of the city, in the heart of a series of large and distinctive granite outcrops.

Contributor Marco Miele created this excellent drone video of a well-known medieval fortress in the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy.  It's called the Fortress of the Conti Guidi, also known as the Roccaccia, and it's in the town of Modigliana in the province of Forlì-Cesena, one of the easternmost of the ER provinces.  The fortress dates to the 9th or 10th century AD.  The video also features some great footage of the well-preserved town of Modigliana, which lies beneath the ruined fortress.

Check out this drone video of a well known monastery near the city of Bologna in northern Italy, compliments of contributor enricocif.  It's called the Abbey of Monteveglio (Abbazia di Monteveglio Sanctuario), and it's located in the town of Valsamoggia just to the west of the great university city.  The current structure dates to the 11th and 12th centuries, although the original monastery was likely considerably older.  Originally built for the Augustinian order, it now houses Franciscan monks.

Check out this drone video of a well known hilltop castle town in the Bologna province of north-central Italy.  The town is called Dozza, and the castle which is situated adjacent to it is called Dozza Castle (Rocca Sforzesca di Dozza).  Most of the castle's structure dates to the 13th century.  Originally a fortification, the structure was converted into a residence and granted to a Cardinal by Pope Clement VII in the 16th century.  The castle has been owned by the town since the 1960's.

The southern parts of the Emilia-Romagna region of north-central Italy sit in the foothills of the Apennine Mountains.  Due to the exposure from potential invasions through the mountains, fortified outposts were built in areas thought to be strategically important for defensive purposes.  One of these is the Castello di Montecuccolo, which you'll see here in this drone video by Luca T.  Located in the Modena province (roughly in the middle of the ER region), the castle features an 11th-century watchtower.

Check out this beautiful drone video from the Italian Apennine Mountains, compliments of contributor Marco Miele.  It's the area around Corno all Scale, a mountain in the Emilia-Romagna region which sits roughly halfway between the ER capital city of Bologna and Florence in neighboring Tuscany.  The mountain has a peak altitude of just under 2k meters (around 6.5k ft.).  The Apennine chain runs on a northwest-to-southeast axis and forms the boundary between the two regions.

For centuries, the area around the Italian seaside town of Cervia has been known for one thing: its distinctive salt.  The Cervia salt mines are located on the Adriatic Sea coast on the boundary between Rimini and Ravena, the two easternmost provinces of the Emilia-Romagna region.  Going back to Roman times, the salt mined here has been prized for its distinctive flavor, and continues to be known around the world.  Check out the Cervia salt mines from above in this drone video by new contributor   fgferrara.

Italy's Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna regions are divided by the Northern Apennine Mountains, part of the broader Apennine chain that runs down the spine of the country.  The tallest of the Northern Apennines is Monte Cimone, which lies in the ER province of Modena.  The mountain has a peak elevation of just over 2.15k meters or about 7.1k ft. above sea level.  A popular skiing destination in winter, it's a sea of green in the warmer months, as you'll see in this drone video by contributor and pilot Carlo TRC TV.

AirVuz contributor Marco Miele brings us this excellent video of the Montel Sole Historical Regional Park in north-central Italy.  The park covers over 15k acres (6.3k hectares) in the foothills of the Appenine Mountains just 25 mi. (40 km) south of Bologna in the Emilia Romagna region.  The park is home to nearly a thousand plant species as well as fauna ranging from wild boar to green woodpeckers.  The area was the site of an infamous massacre by occupying German troops in the Fall of 1944, in the waning months of World War II.

While Italy's Apennine Mountains may not be the tallest in the country, their serene beauty certainly puts them on an equal footing with ranges to their north.  The Apennines actually consists of several chains of related mountains which run down the length of Italy to its "boot".  The northernmost chain runs in a northwest-to-southeast axis, crossing through a number of provinces.  In this video from Marco Miele, you'll get a bird's eye view of the snow-covered Apennines in the province of Bologna.

Check out these excellent drone views of Italy's Apennine Mountains, compliments of AirVuz contributor and pilot Marco Miele.  The video was filmed over the Frignano Park near Pievepelago in Modena, one of the central provinces in the Emilia Romagna region.  This area sits on a ridge of the Northern Appenine Mountains, which serve as the boundary between Emilia Romagna and the region of Tuscany to its southwest.  This area is part of a ridge that includes Mt. Cimone, the highest peak in the Northern Apennines range.

Top AirVuz contributor Luca T. brings us this excellent first person view (FPV) drone video of a famous hilltop castle in the foothills of Italy's Appenine Mountains.  It's called Forte di San Leo, and it's located in the southeastern part of the Emilia Romagna region, not far from the border with the neighboring region of Marche.  The current fortification was built in the 15th century atop the ruins of an earlier fort which dated to Roman times.  Beginning in the mid-1600's, until the early 1900's, the fortress served as a prison.

Check out this fantastic drone video of the 19th century Italian estate called the Rocchetta Mattei, compliments of AirVuz contributor and pilot Tommaso Biagi.  Located in the foothills of the  Apennine Mountains of the province of Bologna in north-central Italy, it was the home of Count Cesare Mattei, a well-known politician and self-taught doctor whose homeopathic treatments were sought by many famous personages of the time.  The structure was built on the site of a fortress that dated to medieval times.

Check out this marvelous aerial tour of the "micro-state" of San Marino, compliments of AirVuz contributor Dani Massaro.  One of the geographic oddities of Europe, San Marino is a tiny sovereign country which is completely surrounded by the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy.  With a permanent population of around 45k, the town is situated on the northeastern slopes of the Apennine Mountains, just west of the coastal city of Rimini.   Along with Lesotho and Vatican City, it's one of the world's three enclaves - a country completely surrounded by another country.
