Located in the foothills of the Apennine Mountains of the province of Bologna in north-central Italy, it was the home of Count Cesare Mattei, a well-known politician and self-taught doctor whose homeopathic treatments were sought by many famous personages of the time. The structure was built on the site of a fortress that dated to medieval times.
