Guatemala is the largest country in Central America. Before the "discovery" of the Western Hemisphere by Spain, Guatemala was the center of a thriving Mayan culture which extended into southern Mexico. The country has a long Pacific Ocean coastline and a very short Caribbean coast. Much of the interior of the country is mountainous highlands dotted with volcanoes (including the highest peak in Central America), with some lowlands areas which are covered with jungles and rainforests, as well as small patches of desert. Following a long period of civil war, the country has settled into a political environment more akin to Costa Rica and is seeing large inflows of tourists as a result.
