The city of Tórshavn lies on the eastern coast of Stremoy, the largest and most populated of this North Atlantic archipelago which is sovereign territory of Denmark. The main part of the city lies on a narrow peninsula which juts out into the sea from the "mainland". With a current population of a bit over 20,000, it's been the most important city in the Faroes since it was founded in the 9th century AD.

Tórshavn is the capital and largest city of the Faroe Islands. Tórshavn is in the southern part on the east coast of Streymoy. To the northwest of the city lies the 347-meter-high mountain Húsareyn, and to the southwest, the 350-meter-high Kirkjubøreyn. They are separated by the Sandá River.
