Touching the Void in Peru
AIRVŪZ STAFF NOTE :
Top contributor rlardon created this spectacular drone video from Peru's Huayhuash Cordillera a subrange of the Andes Mountains. The Huayhuash is home to some of the highest peaks in South America, with three peaks over 20k ft. (about 6.1k m) and another nearly two dozen between 18k-20k ft. (5.5k - 6.1k m). The range sits in the country's Ancash, Lima and Huánuco regions. Its highest peak is Mt. Yerupajá, the second tallest mountain in Peru, which has a summit elevation of about 21.8k ft. above sea level (around 6.6k m).

While most travellers follow the more traditional tourist routes to the east and south of Peru, we ventured north to explore the highest mountain ranges in the country: the Cordillera Blanca and Cordillera Huayhuash. After several acclimatisation hikes to Laguna Wilcacocha, Churup, Paron, 69 and Radian lake, we started our Huayhuash circuit. Away from civilisation, we hiked along colorful vegetation and rock formations, through vast valleys with crazy cows where the high mountain peaks and glaciers were reflected in plentiful lakes. After crossing several passes and spending many days in photography heaven, we reached our highest point at 5100 m, marvelling at the view of Siula Grande, where Joe Simpson went through his now famous ordeal in 1985. Luckily our own trip went much smoother thanks to the support of our guide Oscar and his father Juan, who managed to cook delicious meals even in the most remote places. An unforgettable experience that we topped off with a few rest days in the Ica desert.
Take to the skies and as Oscar would say "El condor pasa"!
