The Frozen Baikal

AIRVŪZ STAFF NOTE :

Top AirVuz contributor BashirAbuShakra brings us this magnificent drone video from Russia's Lake Baikal.  Located in southern Siberia, Baikal is the world's deepest lake, with a maximum depth of 5.4k ft. (just over 1.6k m).  Covering over 12k square mi. (around 32k m), it's also (1) the largest in terms of water volume, holding an astounding 5.7k cubic miles of water (23.6k cubic km), nearly a quarter of the surface freshwater on earth; (2) the world's oldest lake (25-30 million years); and (3) one of the clearest.

BADGES THIS VIDEO HAS EARNED:

Lake Baikal in Siberia, Russia is the oldest, deepest, and most voluminous freshwater lake on Earth. From mid-January to the end of March, it freezes completely, with temperatures plunging to -30°C. The extreme cold made controlling the drone incredibly challenging, and thick gloves made smooth shots difficult, but without them, I had only 15-20 seconds before my fingers could freeze again.

I spent just six days exploring the lake, yet I’ve never felt so deeply connected to a place in such a short time, almost as if we had known each other forever. I’ve dreamed of this place for years, and now I finally understand why. Some connections are simply meant to be.
