Hartshead Pike

AIRVŪZ STAFF NOTE : Hartshead Pike is a hill in the Metropolitan Borough of Tameside in northern England, about a half-hour drive northeast of the city of Manchester. As seen in this outstanding drone video by AirVuz contributor Colsam458, the hill (which stands about 875 ft. tall or around 270 m) is topped by a tower built in 1863 to commemorate the marriage of Albert Edward (eldest son of Queen Victoria and the future King Edward VII) to Princess Alexandra. The current tower replaced an earlier structure which had been built in the mid-18th century.

I took a pleasant walk up to Hartshead Pike to admire the views from this quaint landmark. It took 3 trips to capture the footage. It was too windy to fly on the first visit. The 2nd was during sunset but there were quite a few people there so I couldn't fly too close. The last visit was at sunrise, arriving at 6.45am, where I was able to capture the shots I wanted. I hope you enjoy this short film.

Hartshead Pike is a hill in Tameside in Greater Manchester, England, and its name is associated with the monument on its summit. It overlooks Ashton-under-Lyne, Mossley, Saddleworth, Lees and Oldham. On a clear day you can get views of Manchester, Cheshire and Snowdonia in Wales. The tower was rebuilt in 1863 by John Eaton to commemorate the marriage of Albert Edward to Princess Alexandra, replacing a building that had been there since 1751.

The tower is not on the highest part of the hill but its prominent position, 940 feet (290 m) above sea level. There was also a plaque bearing the polite instruction: ‘Look well at me Before You go, And See You nothing at me Throw’, a reminder that vandalism is nothing new.
