Following the Landslide | Vajont Dam
AIRVŪZ STAFF NOTE :
Former Drone Video of the Week Winner Alberto Ardit brings us this highly creative first person view (FPV) piece from the site of one of the greatest tragedies of post-World War II Italy. Using his FPV quad, he recreates the path of the destruction wrought by a landslide on Monte Toc which slammed into the reservoir of the Vajont Dam during its initial filling period in late 1963. This caused a massive water spill over the dam wall, which formed a giant "tidal wave" that rolled over the Piave Valley below and killed up to 2,500 people.

The Vajont Dam is a disused dam in northern Italy. On 9 October 1963, during initial filling, a landslide caused a megatsunami in the lake in which 50 million cubic metres of water overtopped the dam in a wave of 250 metres (820 ft), which brought massive flooding and destruction to the Piave Valley below, leading to the complete destruction of several villages and towns, and between 1,900 and 2,500 estimated deaths. The dam itself remained almost intact and two thirds of the water was retained behind it.
