Krasnodar is one of the most important cities in southern Russia.  It is situated in the triangle formed by the Black Sea and its Sea of Azov extension, on the Kuban River.  Depending on the area being counted, it's somewhere amongst the top 15-20 cities in Russia in terms of population. It's part of an important historical area known as the Kuban, which was an area settled by the Cossacks, in part as a means for Russia to protect itself from incursions into the heart of Russia by the Ottoman Empire.
