Falkenstein is located in the Thuringian Forest, which covers much of the state of Thuringia (one of the former German Democratic Republic states). The rocks, which are made of an igneous rock called Porphyry, stand 96 meters (about 315 ft.) tall. First scaled in the early 19th century, the rocks are a popular climbing spot in this part of the country, sometimes called Swiss Saxony.
