Trona Pinnacles

The Trona Pinnacles are one of the wonders of California's Mojave Desert. Seen from above in this excellent piece by Angel from Nowhere, the narrow towers rise up to 43 meters (about 140 ft.) above the (dry) Searles Lake bed. Only a couple hours' drive from Los Angeles, it's perhaps not surprising that the highly unusual rock formations caught the attention of Hollywood: the Trona Pinnacles have appeared in numerous TV shows and movies, including Star Trek V and Planet of the Apes
