The Château de la Roche (Department 42) on the Loire during the Cévennes flood in October 2024.

Short video made during the Cévennes flood and the floods in October 2024.

The Villerest dam was open with 5 valves to release the volume of water that had anticipated this massive influx of water from the Grangeant dam.

• Flood regulation and...

However, in Roannais, apart from a few showers, no heavy rain. Not enough to cause the river to overflow or flood the towns bordering it. We had to look further south.

Rive-de-Gier and its valley suffered the wrath of the sky. Just like Pilat and the neighboring departments of Haute-Loire and Ardèche. Although quite far from Roanne, these bad weather events still had consequences in the north of the Loire.

All the rains fed the watercourses that flow into the river. To stem the flood that seemed inevitable, the dam gates were opened. Grangent, upstream, emptied up to 2,500 m3/s. Downstream, in Villerest, we had anticipated by releasing the water from the reservoir.

This therefore made it possible to avoid a catastrophe. With more than 2,300,000 liters (or 2,300 m3) arriving every second in Villerest, the towns downstream could have found themselves with their feet in water. Already with a controlled flow, some allotment gardens or the canoe base of Roanne Mâtel were flooded, without management, the consequences could have been much more dramatic

Thanks to this, the Château de la Roche only saw water loaded with earth but was not worried by the level that remained at its feet.
