Part of the Micronesia sub-region of the South Pacific, Guam covers a land area of around 540 square km (around 210 square mi.). Settled over 4k years ago, Guam was "discovered" by Ferdinand Magellan in the early 16th century. Captured by the USA from Spain during the Spanish-American War, Guam was subsequently captured by Japan shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor.
