Sesimbra is located in the Setúbal District, a bit south of Lisbon, in the Greater Lisbon Region. It lies on the northern shore of Setúbal Bay, in a spot where proximity to major fish migration routes has sustained the town's fishing fleet for centuries. It was once a significant naval port, whose warships protected the approaches to the mouth of the Tagus River and thus to Lisbon.
