Check out this highly cinematic aerial view of a giant field in Southern Russia, where the vast plains of the Eurasian Steppe give way to the foothills of the great Caucasus Mountains.  The area is around the town of Pyatigorsk, a spa town in the Stavropol Krai in the North Caucasus Region.  The prominence of these mountains is due in part to the sudden-ness of the transition: this almost board-flat landscape is less than 100 km (under 60 mi.) from the mighty Mt. Elbirus, Russia's tallest peak.
