St Petersburg is a Russian port on the Baltic Sea. Imperial capital for 2 centuries, the city was founded in 1703 by Peter the Great, immortalised by the famous statue of the Bronze Horseman. Still Russia's cultural centre, the city boasts establishments such as the Mariinsky Theatre, a temple to opera and dance, and the Russian Museum, with its collection of Russian works of art, from Orthodox icons to paintings by Kandinsky.
