Sumy is a provincial capital in northeastern Ukraine, not far from the Russian border. It's one of the two-dozen largest cities in this Eastern European country. While the country saw comparatively few confirmed cases through late March, there were many thousands of suspected by early April, and social distancing measures had been imposed by then.
