This one is a bit of a mixed bag: We start off at the Italian Chapel, a House of God built from 1942 by Italian prisoners of war from two Nissen huts and finished rather beautifully. Next it's off to a tiny glimpse of the Churchill Barriers (for some unremembered reason I didn't fly the Mini 2 to get more of an overview) built during WWII to ward off German submarines. The earlier attempts to use sunken ships had failed. After this trip to the south east coast we head to the west coast to take a look at the Earl's Palace in Birsay, built in the 16th century by Mary Queen of Scot's illegitime half brother Earl Robert Stewart. It's a rather grand place around a courtyard, best seen of course from the air. Right next to it is the tidal island called the Brough of Birsay with its scant remains of Norse long houses and the earlier cathedral - again best viewed from the air. From there it's just a short trip to Yesnaby where a great rock emerges from the sea called Yesnaby castle. Due to high winds I chickened out when trying to hit the gap in the castle after three failed attempts. We finish off with one of Orkney's highlights: the ancient village of Skara Brae, 5,100 years old, best remains of that time in Europe, part of the UNESCO World Heritage sight. When a storm blew off the top cover in 1850 the site was found by the owner of Skaill House.
