Monastery Moraca in Montenegro 2022
AIRVŪZ STAFF NOTE :
Check out this drone video of a famous Serbian Orthodox monastery in Montenegro, compliments of new AirVuz contributor Nikola Zindovic. It's called the Morača Monastery, and it's located near the middle of this small Southeast European country, in the valley of the complex's namesake river. Founded in the mid-13th century, the monastery was burned by encroaching Ottoman forces in 1505. It's known not only for its architecture but also for its frescoes, the oldest of which depicts the prophet Elijah.

Moraca Monastery is located in Montenegro in the municipality of Kolasin. It is located on the banks of the river Morača, after which it got its name, at an altitude of 300m. The place where it was built is a natural plain, which offers a beautiful view of the canyon of the river Morača. Nearby is the Svetigora waterfall, which flows into the Morača, and such natural beauty gives the monastery a special charm. The Morača Monastery has a very rich history, and since it was built during the early rule of Nemanjić, he witnessed many events. Stefan Vukanović Nemanjić, son of Vukanov, and grandson of Stefan Nemanja are mentioned as the founders of the monastery. The monastery was built in 1252.The entire monastery complex consists of two churches - the main church enlarged to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and another smaller church dedicated to St. Nicholas. There is also a boarding house within the monastery complex. The Morača Monastery was built in Raška, while the main portal was built in the Romanesque style. The church is plastered, which differs in many ways from some coastal churches in Montenegro. The monastery complex is surrounded by high walls, with two gates. Stefan Vukanović built the monastery from yellow stone. A stream passes through the yard of the monastery, which then descends through the rocks and forms the miraculous waterfall Svetigora, which flows into Morača. Some Serbian monasteries, endowments of rulers such as Studenica, Zice or Mileseva, served as a model for Moraca. The main church is 22.7 m long, 6.36 m wide, and the highest height (up to the top of the cross) is 23 m. It is paved with gray marble. Probably the most beautiful architectural detail in the monastery is the double doors at the entrance to the middle temple, which are partly made of ivory. The Church of St. Nicholas is much smaller. It is only 6 m high, while its length and width are about 5 m.
