Mar Saba Monastery

Founded in 483 AD, Mar Saba is one of the world's most ancient monasteries. Perched on the cliffs of the Kidron valley in the Judean Desert, completely isolated, it is one of the most striking views in the Holy Land. I've had the good fortune to visit Mar Saba on December 17th, the date in which the birthday of the monastery's founder, Savvas, is celebrated. On this date the monks light up hundreds of candles in in small caves in the valley, creating an amazing sight. This drone video does not include the candle spectacle because, unfortunately, my drone crashed shortly before it started. Luckily, the drone took it well and did not incur any damage. Mar Saba is a unique place, and if you ever get a chance to visit, I recommend it. For several centuries its library held the Archimedes Palimpsest manuscript (look it up).
