Most of the area around the mountain is part of a national park. It sits in a part of the country where the coastal plain transitions to mountains. Lovćen Mountain is of considerable cultural significance in this Southeastern European country and former Yugoslav Confederation member. Among other things, the name "Montenegro" derives from the appearance of the mountain covered in dark forests.
